SEVEN HONOURED IN ST. JAMES ON HEROES DAY

Published

MONTEGO BAY, Oct. 20 (JIS): Seven persons in St. James, who have served in the fields of education, tourism, community service, sport, industry and commerce for more than 230 years combined, were recognised with the Sam Sharpe Awards, at the National Heroes Day Civic and Awards Ceremony, held in Montego Bay, today (October 20).

The Sam Sharpe Awards – named in honour of the National Hero – are conferred annually on persons who have made significant contributions to the betterment of their communities in their respective fields of endeavour, without accolades.

The awardees are Evatt Bloomfield in the field of Tourism; Cecil Cornwall and Eileen McIntosh in Education; Myra Thomas and Elmenia Reid, for Community Service; Basil Johnson for Industry and Commerce; and Linden Thomson in Sport.

A special award for bravery was presented to 24 year-old mother, Makada Hylton of Marliland, St. James, who on June 2, 2014, saved her mother and sister from drowning in flood waters that swept away the vehicle in which the three were travelling.

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Glendon Harris, in his remarks, called on Jamaicans to be more participatory in celebrating the work of those who have paved the way for present day Jamaica.

He lamented the disconnect between the achievements of past and present generations. “These days we find that the history of our nation has become more distorted as each generation is bombarded with new information from other places, not necessarily related to our journey as a people,” the Mayor said.

Jamaica, he continued, must seize the opportunity to pass on to the next generation that which is integral to the strengthening of the country’s sovereignty and seek to teach the youth that what we inherited was fought for, and was not accomplished easily.

“We should add to this story of hardships and victory, the idea that each Jamaican, being the recipient of a free nation, has a responsibility to be as productive as he/she can be, to build Jamaica, and to ensure its prosperity,” Mr. Harris said.

Among the officials participating in the ceremony were Member of Parliament for North West St. James, Dr. Horace Chang, who read the National Heroes Day message from the Leader of the Opposition; Minister of Labour, Social Security, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Derrick Kellier, who read the Prime Minister’s message; President of the St. James Lay Magistrates Association, Claudette Bryan, who deputized for Custos Rotulorum, Ewen Corrodus and read the Governor-General’s message.

Also in attendance were representatives of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the Jamaica Defence Force, the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force and other uniformed groups. The parade was led by members of the Montego Bay Boys and Girls Marching Band and Heights United Marching Band.

Energy Minister Delivers Electrifying Keynote Opening Address at CAREC 2026

Published

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The Bahamas’ Minister of Energy, Utilities and Aviation, The Honourable JoBeth Coleby-Davis, delivered an electrifying address during the opening ceremony of the 2026 CARILEC Resilient/Renewable Energy Community (CAREC) Conference and Exhibition, being held October 18–22, 2026, at the British Colonial Hotel in Nassau, The Bahamas.

Under the theme “Empowering Progress: Strategic Policy and Planning for the Energy Transition,” the event draws more than 200 industry leaders, policymakers, regulators, and energy professionals committed to advancing practical strategies for sustainable and reliable Caribbean power systems through renewable energy and emerging technologies.

During her address, titled “The New Energy Era: Transforming Policy into Progress,” Minister Coleby-Davis reminded attendees that The Bahamas’ national motto, “Forward, Upward, Onward, Together,” aptly describes what the region’s energy transition demands.

“Empowering Progress speaks directly to our national motto. Not waiting for progress, but creating the conditions that allow progress to happen. Meaningful progress, however, does not occur by accident. It requires vision, sound policy, strategic planning, strong institutions, and the determination to turn decisions into results,” said Minister Coleby-Davis.

Participants acknowledged that small island developing states share similar pressures, compounded by geographical challenges, small electricity markets, ageing infrastructure, geopolitical influences, and the growing threat of severe weather.

Tasked with ushering in a new energy era across the islands while addressing the challenges posed by The Bahamas’ unique archipelagic composition, Minister Coleby-Davis said, “Every island needs a different answer, but the same logic. As an archipelagic nation, we must provide electricity across many islands, each with its own demand and infrastructure needs. Our strategy, therefore, must be national in direction, but responsive to individual communities.”

Restating her Ministry’s three core messages—that energy is an economic and security priority, technology must be viewed as a tool to support strong institutional leadership, and natural gas should be considered a bridge, not a destination—Minister Coleby-Davis reiterated that “progress must now be reflected in functioning infrastructure, effective institutions, and better electricity services: from policy commitments to coordinated implementation, and from fragmented investment decisions to long-term planning.”

Organised by CARILEC and co-hosted by Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) and Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC), the annual Conference and Exhibition brings together the Caribbean energy community to advance practical solutions to the region’s most pressing energy challenges and accelerate progress towards more resilient, reliable, and sustainable power systems.
