World Wetlands Day Celebrated in TCI

Providenciales, 04 Feb 2015 – The Wheeland Pond was cleaned up in celebration of World Wetlands Day; the initiative was led by the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs or DEMA. Outreach Coordinator, Amy Avenant explained in a media release that on World Wetlands Day, which was Monday February 2nd, DEMA was able to visit schools to promote the importance of wetlands and an appreciation of the Wheeland Pond. Working with the Turks and Caicos National Trust, the pond was cleaned up this past Saturday with the help of teachers, students and family members from Oseta Jolly Primary School, Clement Howell High School, TCI Middle School and the FilCom Inc.

Individual volunteers from all over Provo also got up early, Amy said, to be there! DEMA also shared some advice on the importance of Wetlands including: they ensure fresh water and replenish ground water, they are a breeding ground for commercially important fish species, they provide vital habitats for migratory birds, wetlands ease flooding and safeguard against drought and they reduce the impact of erosion.
