Severe Weather Warning – 16TH September 2015

Nassau, 16 Sept 2015 – THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FROM 3:30PM EDT UNTIL 5:30PM WEDNESDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2015.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE GRAND BAHAMA, BIMINI AND ABACO AND THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.

AT 3:25PM OBSERVATION, RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWED CLUSTERS OF THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH RICH TROPICAL MOISTURE MOVING OVER THE AREA.

SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, POSSIBLE HAIL AND WATERSPOUT OR TORNADIC ACTIVITY. THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR LOCALIZED FLOODING IN LOW LYING AND FLOOD PRONE AREAS DURING HEAVY DOWNPOURS THROUGH TONIGHT.

BOATERS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOUR AND RESIDENTS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD STAY INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN. RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
