#Providenciales, July 9, 2018 – Turks and Caicos – Invest Turks and Caicos is pleased to announce the Agency’s attendance at the 22nd Annual International African American Hotel Ownership & Investment Summit & Trade Show being held July 25-27, 2018 at the Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay Hotel, Miami, FL.

Invest Turks and Caicos was extended a special invitation to represent as an advisory board member and presenter at the upcoming conference which is presented by the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators & Developers (NABHOOD), Black Meetings & Tourism Magazine and Horizons International Group.  The theme is New Opportunities with Great Partners”.  The summit will be exciting and packed with information to help persons understand the many opportunities available in the lodging industry including hotel ownership, investment, management, employment and supplier diversity.

Attending the summit on behalf of Invest TCI is Investment Services Executive, Rochelle Thompson. Ms. Thompson commented, “this is my 2nd year representing Invest TCI at NABHOOD.  Having attended in 2017 and observed the level of involvement by minorities in hotel ownership and development, and one of the world’s largest sectors: Tourism and Tourism Development, it became evident that this was an opportunity for Invest TCI to push an agenda where we are instrumental in paving the way for Turks and Caicos Islanders, to become “bigger players” in the industry, not only as service providers, but as owners, developers and operators.  Our role at Invest TCI, is to make persons aware of the investment opportunities whilst assisting existing local and foreign investors; with as much information as possible.  We believe this conference is a great way of doing such and so, we encourage persons that are interested in learning more about the industry, to contact us or visit the NABHOOD website for more details about the conference.

Further commenting on the event, Angela Musgrove, Acting CEO for Invest Turks and Caicos stated, “we will see a major shift in the encouragement of domestic investment as this has become a priority of the Turks and Caicos Islands Government and by extension, the Agency.  We want to encourage local entrepreneurs and local investors to become more active in the industry from a hotel ownership and development perspective; this conference provides the ideal platform to do just that.”

The 3 days educational event opens Wednesday morning, July 25th with the NABHOOD/HBCU Scholarship Golf & Deep-Sea Fishing & Shark Tournaments to raise money for minority hospitality students; followed at noon with the Orientation Program for new & prospective hotel owners, and Committee Meetings.  Later the Opening General Session takes place followed by the Welcome Reception in the evening.  General Sessions & workshops are held on Thursday and Friday with Student workshops on Friday and Saturday.

Bomb Threat No 6. In TEN days

Published

Dana Malcolm

Staff Writer

“Our daughter is on the plane and they took them off the plane and we don’t know where the people are—she called— and we haven’t been able to get a hold of her since” the words of a panicked parent and one example of the chaos that criminals making malicious bomb threats on the Turks and Caicos’ airports are causing.

That parent was one of many residents waiting anxiously outside the Providenciales International Airport on Sunday, May 5th after Bomb threats were yet again filed against it; simultaneously threats were also made against the JAGS McCartney Airport in Grand Turk.

The couple, speaking to Wilkie  Arthur, Magnetic Media Court Correspondent,  were sitting in their car, the mother in tears, watching as travelers were made to disembark and leave the airport for their own safety.

We are told authorities cut a hole in airport fencing to quickly evacuate those who were on board aircraft on the runway at the time.

Arthur spoke to pilots who were frustrated at the delay.

”From our perspective, this flight is canceled.“ One of them told Arthur.

They expressed the same concern that other residents had shared with Magnetic Media, that it was time for the police to find the culprits behind the repeated threats which have turned out in all cases so far to be hoaxes.

Magnetic Media observed dozens of resident travelers mowing about on the tarmac and outside of the airport just waiting for police to finish their bomb threat protocol for the sixth time in 10 days.

The other threats came on Friday, April 26, Saturday, April 27, and Monday, April 29 (2) all via email.

Eventually, passengers were observed going back through security to reboard their  flights.

It’s the first time in six encounters that no word has come from the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority about the bomb threat, and when Arthur tried to approach the airport to film, he was told not to.

Based on eyewitness reports, several flights were delayed, including at least one international flight to Texas.
