GRAND BAHAMA, The Bahamas — The Davis Administration is preparing to launch one of the most transformative national initiatives in recent history: the updated National Energy Policy, which aims to reshape the country’s energy landscape for generations to come.
During her recent 2025/2026 Budget Presentation in Parliament, Minister of Energy and Transport, Hon. JoBeth Coleby-Davis, described the upcoming policy as a historic milestone in The Bahamas’ journey toward energy reform.
“As the National Energy Policy moves forward for official publication and implementation, we are positioning The Bahamas to pursue a more resilient, diversified, and sustainable energy future — grounded in transparency, inclusivity, and national ownership,” she stated.
Further, Minister Coleby-Davis noted, The National Energy Policy, last updated in 2013, has undergone a comprehensive review and modernization to meet the evolving needs and challenges of the country’s energy sector. With major developments and shifts in technology and environmental priorities over the last decade, the former policy had become outdated.
The Ministry of Energy and Transport, in collaboration with the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA), led a full-scale review and revision process. A key element of this effort was nationwide public participation.
According to the Minister of Energy, over the past year, the government launched an extensive public consultation campaign, reaching communities in New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco, Eleuthera, Cat Island, Exuma, and Inagua. These sessions gave residents a chance to share their concerns, ideas, and recommendations, while targeted meetings with energy industry stakeholders added further depth to the discussions.
Minister Coleby-Davis especially praised the contributions of a young, dynamic team of professionals under the age of 35, who played a central role in drafting the revised policy.
“Their dedication and forward-thinking approach represent the promise of the next generation of leadership in our energy sector,” she said.
The result of this collaborative national effort is the National Energy Policy 2025–2030, which is expected to be officially published (gazetted) by the end of June.
The updated policy outlines a clear roadmap toward a more affordable, reliable, and clean energy future, forming a core pillar of the government’s broader reform strategy. It seeks to address long-standing challenges while accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources and improving energy service delivery nationwide.
