Turks and Caicos, December 24, 2024 – The PDM says it will not wait for the private sector to activate a robust housing development plan for the Turks and Caicos Islands; the party has announced its intention to construct 150 government houses during its first term in office.
“I am honoured to present phase two of our affordable housing and accommodation policy, which focuses on expanding access through innovation and inclusion solutions. We believe in creating communities that bring together people, not divide them. The PDM will collaborate with developers to establish mixed-income housing projects where families from diverse financial backgrounds can thrive side by side,” explained Robert Been Jr, PDM Deputy Leader and All Island candidate.
The plan is for high quality construction, using sustainable materials in government-led housing initiatives which embrace houses and apartments.
“We will not wait for the private sector alone to act,” said Been in a December 18 press conference adding, “to expedite housing solutions, the PDM will simplify the regulatory framework for applying for your housing. We will cut through unnecessary red tape making it faster and more cost effective for developers to deliver affordable housing projects. Time is of the essence and families cannot afford to wait any longer.”
The PDM is ready to revise the land lease program and intends to ensure low interest lending options, explained Been.
“The PDM will scrap the 50% discount offered by the PNP current market value for Crown Land. Our locals will purchase their Crown Land based on the original lease agreement price.”
To this, there was applause by the full slate of PDM Candidates which comprised the head table at the media event.
“We are building for the future by integrating sustainable practices into housing developments. From solar panels to water saving technologies, our housing projects will empower residents to lower their utility costs while protecting the environment.”
He said grants will be made available to current homeowners to ensure the touted benefits are within all residents’ reach.
“This is not just about providing homes and apartments. It is about building communities, fostering hope and empowering Turks and Caicos Islanders to take ownership of their future.”
He said the phase two roll out is a demonstration that the PDM is ready to lead and will “transform the dream of affordable housing into a living reality for the people of Turks and Caicos.”
Been concluded his remarks with a graphic presentation, showing the site plan of PDM affordable housing community project.
