BAHAMAS: Environmental Health Hosted Expert Mission Towards Mosquito Control

Published

on

#Bahamas, February 22, 2018 – Nassau – The Department of Environmental Health in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) hosted an Expert Mission recently towards The Bahamas’ implementing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), an old technique that is safe and cost effective in the integrated vector (mosquito) control programme.

SIT has been successfully applied as an agricultural control tool to various insect species including med flies, codling moth Cydia pomonella (L.), onion maggot Delia antiqua (Meigen) and some species of tsetse flies Glossina spp as means of sustaining crops, decreasing financial inputs and increasing economic benefits.

environmental 2Most recently this technology has transitioned to the area of mosquito control.  SIT is thought to be an effective mechanism in mitigating the transmission of vector borne diseases such as Dengue Fever, Chickungunya and most recently the ZIKA virus known to be transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, in The Bahamas.

It is expected that if effectively introduced there would be a drastic decrease of overall populations and the risk of the spread of the mentioned mosquito diseases.

The five-day seminar, January 15-19, 2018 delivered by Dr. Clelia Oliva, PhD, of the IAEA, consisted of three major topics including an overview of SIT, the intricacies of Aedes rearing, together with design setup and maintenance of an insectary, as well as field surveillance including site selection and establishment.

The innovative tool is not a standalone fix for control, but must be practiced with the community’s role in keeping their properties free from water holding containers that breed mosquitoes – which encourages the drill — to tip over, turn down and throw away breeding sites.

More Bahamians Accessing HIV, STI Care Through NHI

Published

on

NASSAU, Bahamas — More Bahamians are accessing HIV and sexually transmitted infection-related healthcare through National Health Insurance, a trend the NHI Authority says should be viewed positively.

NHIA stressed in an August 6 statement that its 2025 figures measure healthcare utilisation, not newly diagnosed infections. They include beneficiaries screened, treated, monitored or receiving follow-up care, including people diagnosed previously.

“Increased utilisation of these services should be viewed as a positive development,” NHIA said.

The Authority pointed to “greater enrolment and use of NHI, improved access to screening and testing, continued treatment and monitoring of existing conditions, and increased willingness to seek medical care.”

The development comes amid a mixed three-year HIV picture. New diagnoses rose from 130 in 2023 to 156 in 2024, before declining to 142 in 2025.

NHIA said increased utilisation demonstrates that more beneficiaries are accessing needed healthcare and actively managing their health, reinforcing the importance of screening, early diagnosis and continued treatment.

With those two thoughts in mind, I, along with a team of experts, created three incredible flavors we believe really connect with and celebrate the essence of island living,” she said.

“Additionally, being that Monument is the first product to be 100% manufactured by Caribbean Wines & Spirits, we really wanted to ensure that both the flavors and packaging honored our rich heritage. The winning sloop led by Kianno Hutchinson and Joss Knowles showcased their skillmanship in the E-Class category across each round of competition. In addition to winning the trophy, the skippers were awarded a $5,000 donation, an $8,000 stipend to the junior sailing club of their island and a limited-edition Lady Kayla Bahamas Goombay Punch commemorative can, which will be released soon.

Jonathan Thronebury, Marketing Director of CBC shared the significance behind The Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup.

The whole championship was super competitive, and every single race was a fight. Alvington McKenzie was extremely competitive and had us until the Long Island regatta, which made it a very fun and tough competition. Very excited to have been the winner of a super close championship,” Knowles revealed.

“In sailing consistency is key and our guys in Lady Kayla are some of the best in the business at staying near the top.  In the end, that was enough to secure their first Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup win.
