Alabama man stable, lost right kidney in TCI shooting

Published

Turks and Caicos, June 26th 2017 – Providenciales – The good news is that Kevin Newman, an Alabama man who survived being shot in his abdomen early on Friday during an armed robbery along grace bay is stable.  The bad news is that he lost his right kidney in the shooting where he was shot once, and is in a medically induced coma.
Newman, according to family comments published in the NY Post was out looking for his son around 1:45am on Friday when he was approached by armed bandits looking to rob him.
Police are now hunting down four men and have issued wanted posters, in connection to the case which has fuelled strings of angry commentary on social media and which has attracted the attention of popular news networks which are reporting on the crime.
Newman was here on holiday, with his family.  That family, led by wife, Tiffany Newman raised money on a Go Fund Me account and had Newman medically evacuated to Broward Health Medical Center in Florida by late Friday.
The Ministry of Tourism reported that they were willing to pay for the airlift, but the fast acting family had already raised the reported $15,000.
A Tourist Board staffer stayed by the side of the family throughout the ordeal, ensuring the entire family was flown back to the US as soon as possible to be with Mr. Newman.
Tiffany Newman told ABC News, ““It caused damage to his liver, but the main issue was that it hit his inferior vena cava and right kidney vein. He lost a very large amount of blood, so he received lots of transfusion… The surgeon also had to remove his right kidney, and his left kidney function is being monitored closely. “
Up to news production time, no one was reported arrested for the crime.

The Ministry of Tourism said, “We are shocked and saddened regarding the incident that occurred on one of our islands, in the early morning of June 23, involving a visitor to the destination. He and his family continue to be in our thoughts and prayers while doctors continue to monitor his recovery.

A criminal act, whether against a resident or visitor, is never something taken lightly and there is a heightened and concentrated effort to identify the individual(s) responsible. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a popular and peaceful destination known for its pristine beaches and relaxed atmosphere and this type of occurrence sends a ripple through the entire community. The safety, of all those on the islands, are always our top priority and remains as such.  The Ministry of Tourism is in complete cooperation with our acting police commissioner who has increased visible security.  We ask that everyone cooperate with authorities as needed.”

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands: The Crown Land Unit, with coordination and support from the Informal Settlements Unit (ISU), conducted a multi-agency enforcement exercise in the Five Cays area on Thursday, September 17, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to address the illegal occupation and unauthorised use of Crown land.

The exercise brought together representatives from the Crown Land Unit, ISU and the Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force. Security for the exercise was provided by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. Inspections were conducted across several parcels of Crown land throughout Five Cays, where instances of illegal occupation and unauthorised use had been identified.

During the exercise, a total of forty (40) Section 22 Notices of Unauthorised Occupation were served in accordance with the provisions of the Crown Land Ordinance. The notices related to various forms of unauthorised occupation and use of Crown land, including incomplete structures, shipping containers, derelict vehicles, trailer chassis, building materials and other items.

Where persons were not present, notices were affixed to the relevant structures or items. The exercise forms part of the Crown Land Unit’s continuing efforts to prevent squatting and encroachment on Crown land and to ensure that identified instances of unauthorised occupation are appropriately addressed.

The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands reminds the public that Crown land must not be occupied, developed or otherwise used without lawful authority.

Bahamas Issues Cybersecurity Alert Over Akira Ransomware Threat

Published

on

Nassau, The Bahamas, October 22, 2026 — The National Computer Incident Response Team of The Bahamas (CIRT-BS) has issued a cybersecurity advisory warning businesses, government institutions and other organisations about the growing threat posed by Akira ransomware, a cybercriminal operation capable of stealing sensitive information, disrupting networks and demanding ransom payments.

Active since March 2023, Akira operates through a Ransomware-as-a-Service model, with affiliates exploiting weaknesses in computer networks to gain unauthorised access.

Once inside, attackers can steal confidential data, disable recovery systems and encrypt files, preventing organisations from accessing critical information.

Particularly concerning is Akira’s use of double extortion, threatening to publish stolen information unless victims pay. Some attacks involve data theft without encryption.

The October 22 advisory identifies vulnerabilities involving Cisco and SonicWall firewalls, VPN services, Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol, Veeam backup systems and outdated Windows and Linux operating systems. VMware ESXi and Nutanix AHV environments are also potential targets.

Attackers may exploit unpatched software, stolen login credentials and inadequately secured remote-access applications, including AnyDesk and RustDesk.

Warning signs include unexpected administrator accounts, unusual remote logins, unauthorised software installations, suspicious backup activity, mass file changes and ransom notes.

CIRT-BS recommends immediate security updates, multifactor authentication, restricted remote access, stronger network monitoring and secure backups maintained separately from operational systems.

Organisations should also remove unnecessary internet exposure of remote desktop services, limit administrative privileges and regularly test backup restoration.

The advisory does not identify any confirmed Akira attack against a Bahamian organisation but highlights vulnerabilities that could expose institutions to serious financial and operational disruption.

Cybersecurity incidents can be reported to CIRT-BS at soc@cirt.bs or through its official website.
