Clarence Selver to make big announcement at Regent Palms today

Published

on

Providenciales, TCI, August 5, 2016 – In the past week, the list of who is entering front line politics has grown exponentially… there is Jas Walkin, an educator from North Caicos; there is Damian Wilson, talk show host and media man from Grand Turk; there is Courtney Missick, talk show host and farmer from Kew in North Caicos and arguably most controversial of all, is Hon Clarence Selver.

Selver is a 40 year PDM supporter and current House of Assembly member appointed to parliament by his party but who tomorrow will reveal officially, that he is running in the crowded at large race as an independent.  Selver, has made it no secret that he believes the selection process within his PDM party for the five all island standard bearers was flawed, that he was treated unfairly and is repeatedly being denied the right to run on the PDM ticket and without explanation.

At 1pm at the Regent Palms he will tell the nation, according to our interview with him on Thursday, that he does not plan to resign as he is a PDM; that he does not plan to resign from Parliament as the PDM did not constitutionally appoint him and that if the People’s Democratic Movement wants him to vacate the spot, then they will have to do what they can to remove him… but that he is not going.  Adamant, firm, fixed and focused are some ways to describe the tone of voice of Hon Clarence Selver who has been a power house in the House of Assembly, and is a three time winning representative for North Caicos who has now determined that it is still his time and he will not be denied.

The PDM has constitutional provisions, they say to deal with this unprecedented situation.  We asked Hon Selver, why he would not resign and how he feels remaining in the House sitting on the same side with a party he is currently at odds with.  There was only the reply that the process was flawed and that he will return to the PDM fold, and that when he does… it will be for the leadership of the party.

The PDM Leader has responded that the doors are open for Clarence Selver to return, but points out that Hon Selver was given the opportunity to serve in the House of Assembly and at least one committee by the hand of the Opposition.  We wait to see if that hand will be pulled back, and if so, what the Governor will then do.

ANDY BURNHAM, NEW UK PM’S FIRST ORDER: LOWER THE COST OF LIVING

Published

Britain’s new Prime Minister launches his administration with tax relief aimed at easing pressure on household budgets as affordability becomes a defining issue for governments worldwide.

By Deandrea Hamilton | Magnetic Media

LONDON, England — Andy Burnham has wasted little time signaling a new direction for the United Kingdom, making the cost of living the first priority of his administration with a plan to reduce household electricity bills through tax relief.

The newly elected Prime Minister announced that Value Added Tax (VAT) will be removed from domestic electricity bills beginning October 1, describing the measure as part of a broader effort to make everyday life more affordable for working families. The move fulfills a key campaign promise and marks an early shift in the government’s economic agenda.

Burnham inherits a nation still grappling with stubborn inflation, rising household expenses and years of political turnover. His opening policy signals an intention to focus on practical measures that deliver immediate financial relief while restoring confidence in government.

The announcement also resonates across the Caribbean, where affordability remains a pressing concern. In the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Government has just concluded its one-time cost-of-living assistance programme for qualifying residents. While the approaches differ, both reflect a growing recognition that easing financial pressure on households has become one of the defining challenges facing governments today.

His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has declared three days of national mourning following the tragic loss of lives in the M.V. Barima incident, as the nation continues to grieve alongside the families and communities affected.

The period of national mourning will be observed from Wednesday, July 22, through Friday, July 24, 2026, in honour of the victims of the tragedy. During this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all Government buildings and other appropriate locations across the country.

As part of the observances, Wednesday, July 22, has been designated a National Day of Prayer. A National Day of Prayer and Remembrance will be held at the Kingston Seawall in Georgetown, bringing together citizens in solidarity to honour the lives lost and offer support to grieving families.

The programme of remembrance will continue with a Night of Reflection and Prayer in Port Kaituma on Thursday, July 23, followed by another observance in Mabaruma on Friday, July 24.

The government is also encouraging religious organisations, civic groups and citizens throughout Guyana to organise candlelight vigils and moments of prayer during the three days as the nation collectively reflects on the tragedy and pays tribute to the victims. The declaration of national mourning underscores the government’s commitment to standing with the bereaved families and affected communities as Guyana mourns one of the country’s most heartbreaking maritime tragedies.
