US President addresses Climate Change at State of the Union, but only briefly

#USA, February 9, 2023 – Bringing back the American utopia and helping out the small guy was the overhauling theme of President Joe Biden’s second State of the Union speech on Tuesday (February 7th) promising Americans a suite of reforms that would shove down taxes and lift up the middle class making the ‘everyday Americans richer; one of those reforms ‘The Inflation Reduction Act’, may have a significant impact on the Caribbean region.

Biden described it as “the most significant investment ever to tackle the climate crises”.

The act, which the Republicans who control the Senate have promised to repeal, makes provisions for incentivizing the use of cleaner fuels, becoming a world leader in de-carbonization, cutting air pollution and more.

The President also hinted that upgrades may finally be on the way for US territory, Puerto Rico which has suffered repeated infrastructural devastation after hurricanes in the last decade.

“I’ve visited the devastating aftermaths of record floods and droughts, storms and wildfires. In addition to emergency recovery from Puerto Rico to Florida to Idaho, we are rebuilding for the long term.

New, electric grids able to weather the next major storm; roads and water systems to withstand the next big flood; clean energy to cut pollution and create jobs in communities too often left behind,” he said.

America is one of the planet’s worst polluters pumping out harmful gasses that speed up global warming and is responsible for stealing the Caribbean’s shoreline, overheating its coral reefs and presenting more fierce dangers to life and property.

Jamaican gets multi-million dollar grant to enhance resilience

Jamaica got a 3 million US dollar grant from humanitarian charity organisation Direct Relief, as part of its mission to strengthen resilience in the Caribbean region. This is also an effort to enhance Healthcare systems and infrastructure throughout Jamaica in preparation for natural disasters as the organization renews its ongoing partnership with the island. This was announced by Direct Relief in an article on May 1.

Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana sign security agreement

To enhance and strengthen security in the Guiana Shield, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana on Monday April 29, signed a security common master plan following a meeting in George Town, as announced By President of Guyana Irfaan Ali on Facebook. Ali expressed that the agreement will hopefully enhance collaborations and relations between Suriname and French Guiana.

Grenada Prime Minister says there needs to be greater focus on coral health in the region’s universities.

The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, at the 2024 Sustainable Tourism Conference on April 22, expressed that Caribbean universities should be leading researchers for coral restoration as he addressed the importance of corals to the region’s capacity for tourism sustainability amid climate change

Regarding this, he called for more funding to encourage universities to create more marine experts, given the region’s vulnerability to climate change effects.
