TCI on right track in Covid-19 Pandemic fight; 39% fully vaccinated says Health Minister
#TurksandCaicos, May 3, 2021 – The Turks and Caicos Islands is on the verge of the Covid-19 pandemic breakthrough as the number of new infections keeps thinning each day. As of April 23, 2021, the Islands country had recorded only 26 new cases as per the Minister of Health’s report.
Speaking about the country’s progress in the fight against the novel Coronavirus pandemic, the Minister of Health, Hon. E. Jay Saunders revealed at least 16,340 persons had taken at least one dose of Pfizer vaccine as of April 25.
Broken down by the islands, 13,520 persons reside in the Providenciales, 1,852 in Grand Turk, 209 in Parrot Cay, 316 in North & Middle Caicos, 381 in South Caicos, and 54 in Salt Cay, translating to 47 per cent of the total population.
More interestingly, 13,484 persons are fully vaccinated, making up 39 per cent of the total population.
Even though the number of positive cases is going down drastically, Hon Saunders said the government could not open the country until 70 per cent of people are vaccinated and no more positive cases recorded in the country.
“So, if we have the virus with only one person, and the country has the virus, we’re still at risk,” said Saunders.
“Until we get the numbers down to zero, and until our vaccination rate is up to 70per cent, then we can’t do the things that we’d like to do in terms of fully opening the country,” he added.
However, the Minister also revealed that the country’s PCR positive test rate had gone down from almost 30 per cent at the end of February to about 4 per cent at the conference time.
According to the Hon. Saunders, the government is working to get the positive rate of infection down to at least a 3 per cent in order to comply with the set CDC guidelines and get off the CDC list. Despite the good news, the Minister of Health did not hesitate to point out the major undoing in the ramped-up vaccination drive.
“Despite the number I have just given you, the rate of uptake of the vaccines is slowed,” warned Hon. Saunders in a Monday April 26, press conference . This comes as a setback in the move to get 7,000 people vaccinated within the next six weeks.
According to the information given by the Deputy Premier and Minister at the press event, the current weekly vaccination rate ranges between 500 and 600 from the previous 2,000-2,500 per week.

#TurksandCaicos, May 13, 2024 – Detectives of the Serious Crime Unit of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force have
charged a man who allegedly stole a vehicle.
The accused, DANVANTE BRISCO, 30, of Kew Town, Providenciales, was charged with:
- One Count: Robbery
- One Count: Taking Motor Vehicle Without Authority
- One Count: Using Offensive Weapon to cause fear
Mr. BRISCO appeared in court today (May 13 ) and was granted bail of $7500.00 with one surety.
The matter was adjourned to July 05 for a Sufficiency Hearing.
#TurksandCaicos, May 13, 2024 – A 20-year-old Dock Yard male appeared in court today (May 13th) charged with a series of firearm-related offences.
The accused, JAMES SIMON, was denied bail and remanded into custody pending a Sufficiency Hearing scheduled for July 05th, 2024.
Mr. SIMON faces the following charges:
- One Count: Robbery;
- One Count: Gang Membership
- One Count: Possession of a Firearm for the Benefit of a Gang
- One Count: Possession of Ammunition for the Benefit of a Gang.
The charges against Mr. Simon followed investigations by officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force into a robbery at the parking lot of a Casino where three males robbed a victim.
Additionally, Mr. Simon is charged with the following offences, having been arrested on May 02nd, 2024, along South Dock Road.
- One Count: Possession of a Firearm
- One Count: Possession of Ammunition
- One Count: Unlawful Entry
Officers also charged a teenage minor who was in the company of Mr. Simon on May 02nd with One Count of UNLAWFUL ENTRY.
The accused, seventeen and from Kew Town, Providenciales, pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on May 20th.
