Caribbean Democrat Union Paper Competition 2019

July 26, 2019 – The Caribbean Democrat Union (CDU) held its second annual Policy Paper Competition which ran from 26th June to 18th July 2019. A total of twelve (12) policy papers were submitted from CDU sister party members from across the region.

The topics for this year’s competition included:

  • Gender Equality, a pre-requisite for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Caribbean by 2030.
  • UK – Caribbean Relations and Brexit: Opportunities for Trade
  • Youth, Political Participation and Governance – Planning for the Next Generation of Leaders.
  • Climate Change – The Existential Threat to the Development of the Caribbean.

The top four (4) papers were selected by policy experts from the UK Conservative Party and were also assessed by Dr. Hon. Godwin Friday, CDU Vice Chair for Policy Development and External Affairs, and Mr. Nick Francis, CDU Secretary General. The four (4) winners were:

  • Senator Hon. Judd Cadet – New National Party (NNP), Grenada
  • Ms. Anazette Olivera – United Democratic Party (UDP), Belize
  • Ms. Terraine Webster – One Anguilla Youth (OAY)
  • Mr. Luchiano Dupuis – Dominica Freedom Party

In addition to presenting their policy papers at an online webinar within the CDU network, the winners of this year’s competition will also be sponsored by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) to attend the Big Tent Ideas Festival in London on August 31st 2019.

Hon. Dr. Godwin Friday, extended his congratulations to the winners and to all those who participated in this year’s competition which saw an increase in submissions than the previous year.

The aim of this annual activity is to encourage policy development among members of the CDU and provide opportunities for important dialogue on issues affecting the Caribbean region.

Guyana’s financial support for Palestine

#Palestine#Guyana, April 24, 2024 – A cheque of over GY$110 million which is USD$500 thousand, was presented to President Irfaan Ali, at a handover ceremony on April 23, in support of Palestine for Humanitarian efforts, according to reports.

The money, raised by Muslims and non Muslims, comes after an appeal by the National Ramadan Village during the month of Ramadan.

It will be sent to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) to help the victims of the ongoing war.

Jamaica New Rui destination

#Riu#Jamaica, April 25, 2024 – Jamaica’s tourism product is being enhanced with a new all inclusive Riu Resort called the Riu Palace Aquarelle, scheduled to open on May 4 at White Bay Beach in Falmouth. As reported by Caribbean Journal, the destination will house 750 rooms and will promote the country’s green transition, having 800 solar photovoltaic panels, saving up to 10 percent of the hotel’s energy use.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Haiti Trips

#Haiti#RoyalCaribbean, April 26, 2024- Royal Caribbean has decided to cancel all of its trips to Labadee, a popular destination in Haiti due to the worsening crisis, putting further strain on the country’s tourism sector. Cancellations were initially set to last until mid March but now they have been extended through the summer into September, according to a post by Royal Caribbean. A spokesperson for the organization is reported saying the Global Security and Intel team is monitoring the situation in Haiti, further expressing that the cancellations come as the safety and security of its guests are top priority.
