DPM Turnquest Attends IDB Governors’ Annual Consultation in Kingston

#Jamaica, February 27, 2018 – Kingston – Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and IDB Governor, the Hon. K. Peter Turnquest led a Bahamas delegation to the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) 7th Annual Consultation of the Governors of the Caribbean Country Department, February 26-27, 2018 in Kingston, Jamaica.

 DPM Turnquest anticipated discussions today with President of the IDB, Luis Alberto Moreno, in bilateral meetings, on the IDB Country Strategy for The Bahamas and the status of existing and upcoming bank operations in the country.

The annual consultation of Caribbean Governors involves discussion on a range of urgent administrative topics, dialogue on IDB-sponsored developments in the region, and agreement on main agenda points for the Bank’s Annual Meeting in Mendoza, Argentina, in late March.   Meetings continue tomorrow morning with Sir Richard Branson and IDB Group President Moreno leading a discussion on the imperative for the Caribbean to act now to fully benefit from the digital revolution.
In the afternoon session, the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, and Toomas Hendrik IIves, Former President of the Republic of Estonia, will present on leveraging ICT opportunities for advancing technical change in the Caribbean.
DPM Turnquest is accompanied to the IDB Annual Consultation by Financial Secretary (Acting), Marlon Johnson; Deputy Director of Economic Planning, Ministry of Finance, Carl Oliver; IDB Executive Director for the Caribbean Constituency, Jerry Butler (Bahamas); and Junior Counselor, Mavis Culmer (Bahamas).

Bahamas economic growth

The Bahamas’ economy is in good standing according to reports from the Bahamas National Statistical Institute which released the Quarterly Gross Domestic Product Series. They indicate that quarterly GDP trends for 2023 saw increases compared to 2022, a sign of recovery from the Covid 19 pandemic.

The most significant increase was 9.9 percent in the first quarter of 2023, and the industries responsible for the growth include Accommodations and food, construction and Arts.

In just a few days, athletes from over fifty countries will converge in The Bahamas for the BTC World Athletic Relays Bahamas 24. C&W Communications, the parent company of BTC, is proud to be associated with this major event, which will see athletes from The Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago competing for a place in the upcoming Olympic games in Paris.

BTC has hosted a special event just for the Caribbean athletes, at the newly renovated Queen’s Staircase in Nassau, a recently renovated historic landmark visited by thousands of tourists each day. This event gave athletes the opportunity to unwind, mingle, and to learn more about each other right before the competition.

This is the fourth time that BTC and its parent company C&W Communications have title sponsored the world relays. The BTC World Athletic Relays will be held at the Thomas A. Robinson Track & Field Stadium from May 4-5, under the theme, “Chase the Sun, from Paradise to Paris.”

RBC appoints new Country Manager and Area Vice President for Turks & Caicos
