Deandrea Hamilton | Editor Turks and Caicos, July 14, 2025 – In a landmark moment for youth empowerment across the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands Society of Young Leaders (TCISYL) was officially launched on Saturday, July 5, 2025, signaling the beginning of a bold new era of youth-led leadership and national engagement.
The public launch event, attended by Hon. Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Social Services, was met with
overwhelming support from across the public and private sectors. Described by one attendee as “a day that will echo through generations,” the event marked the formal debut of one of the country’s first large-scale, youth-run advocacy and leadership organizations.
At the forefront of this movement is Founder and President Antwon Walkin, a decorated scholar and CARIFTA medalist, whose message of courage and purpose deeply resonated:
“I was told I was too young. Too bold. Too ambitious. But I believed that from this small island, greatness could rise,” said Walkin. “This isn’t just an organization — it’s the cry of a generation refusing to wait their turn. We are the now, and we will shape the future.”
From Vision to Movement
The foundation for TCISYL was laid more than a year ago. In a May 2024 founding statement, Walkin called for urgent youth inclusion in governance, economic policy, and national development. Citing long-standing issues such as rising gun violence, limited affordable housing, and inadequate support for young entrepreneurs, he emphasized the need for youth to claim their seat at the decision-making table.
“We are by far the largest demographic in the TCI, and without a shadow of a doubt, we are the future,” he wrote. “But we must take our future into our own hands.”
With the support of Co-Founders Manville D. Gardiner (Vice President), Andy Missick, and a growing team of dynamic leaders, the Society has built a membership of nearly 200 young professionals aged 18–40 from across the islands.

A National Call to Action With programs in mentorship, leadership development, advocacy, and skill-building already in the works, the Society aims to create a platform where youth are not just seen — but heard, equipped, and empowered.
“This organization is about country above all else,” said Walkin. “We are committed to uniting our generation — not around politics, but purpose. We are here to make our mark.”
The Society thanks its founding sponsors, including Conservative Architects Ltd., Genesis Auto-Mobile Enterprises Ltd., and other valued contributors whose support has made this vision a reality.
