Turks and Caicos, December 6, 2024 – The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), is deeply alarmed by reports of the United States’ renewed plans to deport thousands of migrants—many of whom may soon arrive on our shores under a new Trump Administration.
This development is disturbing and signals discussions may have been taking place for such a plan to be put in motion by the Premier and his PNP government and President Trump’s transition team in coming up with a New Immigration Deal. Is this why the Premier had to rush the asylum bill through the House of Assembly and into law? Is the Minister of Immigration being misled by the Premier? Someone is misleading the People.
This situation starkly highlights the catastrophic failure of the Progressive National Party (PNP) government to establish a proactive and effective immigration policy.
For nearly four years, the PNP has neglected the escalating immigration crisis, leaving our borders vulnerable and our nation at risk. The implications of this U.S. policy shift could be devastating for Turks and Caicos Islanders, potentially fueling traffickers and increasing the arrival of deported criminals from our neighboring countries.
The consequences of this negligence are dire:
- Resource Strain: Our healthcare, housing, and education systems are already under pressure. A sudden influx of deportees will push them to the brink of collapse.
- National Security Risks: The PNP’s failure to fortify our borders exposes us to criminal elements, jeopardizing the safety of our citizens.
- Economic Fallout: With rising living costs and limited job opportunities, an unplanned migrant surge will worsen unemployment and resource competition.
The PNP has consistently demonstrated its inability to address this crisis:
- Neglected Border Security: Despite promises, they have failed to invest in essential maritime surveillance and coordinated border management.
- Ineffective Diplomatic Engagement: The PNP has not effectively advocated for solutions that protect our islands.
- Absence of a National Strategy: While the U.S. implements clear immigration policies, the PNP remains reactionary, lacking a comprehensive plan.
PDM’s Commitment to Change
Under a PDM government, we will not allow this negligence to continue. Our plan includes:
- Fortifying Borders: Implementing state-of-the-art maritime surveillance and patrol systems.
- Enhancing Immigration Enforcement: Establishing a modern biometric system for tracking lawful entries and exits.
- Proactive Diplomacy: Collaborating with international partners to prevent our islands from becoming a haven for criminal elements.
- Empowering Communities: Prioritizing resources for housing, healthcare, and job creation for our citizens.
- Strengthening National Security: Investing in training and expanding our police and border forces.
The PNP’s Negotiations endanger and can destroy our future. It is time for the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands to demand leadership that prioritizes your safety, resources, and future. The PDM is ready to lead with competence and unwavering dedication to our people.
Your Future is Our Priority.
