Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – Friday, 22 November 2024:  The Energy and Utilities Department (EUD), under the Ministry of Public Safety and Utilities (MPSU), is pleased to announce the commencement of the installation of 60 solar streetlights in Providenciales. Funded by the European Union (EU) through the RESEMBID programme and implemented by Expertise France, this project is designed to enhance public safety, support sustainability, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in the Turks and Caicos Islands’ ongoing commitment to sustainable development and renewable energy. By harnessing solar power, the streetlights will help reduce the country’s carbon footprint while providing a reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly lighting solution. In addition to the 60 lights being installed in Providenciales, a further 60 solar streetlights will be installed across the remaining islands in the Turks and Caicos Chain, ensuring that communities throughout the islands benefit from improved lighting and safety.

“We are thrilled to see this project come to fruition,” said Hon. Kyle Knowles, Minister of Public Safety and Utilities. “These solar streetlights will make our streets safer, more secure, and more welcoming, especially at night. This project is an essential part of our ongoing efforts to improve the well-being of our residents and promote sustainable practices across the islands.”

Hon. Knowles continued, “The installation of solar streetlights represents a transformative shift in how we approach infrastructure in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In addition to improving safety and security, this initiative will drive long-term cost savings, reduce our reliance on imported energy, and contribute to environmental preservation. It is a clear demonstration of our government’s commitment to a more sustainable, energy-efficient future for the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

The solar streetlights are equipped with advanced technology to ensure reliable night-time operation with minimal maintenance. This infrastructure not only provides a renewable energy solution but will also help reduce energy costs, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy future for the community.

Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents noting the enhanced safety and aesthetic benefits the new lights will bring to their neighbourhoods. This initiative underscores the importance of community involvement and the role of public safety in building vibrant, thriving communities.

The Energy and Utilities Department extends its gratitude to RENERGYTT for their expertise and dedication in bringing this important project to life. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter, greener future for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Statement from the Minister of Immigration

Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands

Turks and Caicos, December 5, 2024 – The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands categorically states that we will not, under any circumstances, accept deportees from the United States or any other nation who are not citizens of Turks and Caicos. Our country’s immigration policies are clear and firmly rooted in the principles of sovereignty, the protection of our borders, and the welfare of our people.

Turks and Caicos, like all nations, has the sovereign right to determine who may reside within its borders. The unilateral imposition of third-country deportation policies, such as those reportedly under consideration by the incoming Trump administration, is fundamentally at odds with international norms and legal standards.

We are deeply concerned about any suggestion of displacing individuals to countries with which they have no connection. Such policies disregard the cultural, social, and economic implications for receiving countries and the humanitarian impact on the individuals affected.

We remind all stakeholders that Turks and Caicos is already facing significant challenges managing irregular migration and the accompanying strain on our resources. We will not permit external policies to exacerbate these challenges, nor undermine or dictate our national security.

Our Government remains committed to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with the United States and our other international partners. However, we are steadfast in our commitment to protecting the interests of the Turks and Caicos Islands and upholding the integrity of our immigration system.

To be clear: The Turks and Caicos Islands will not participate in any program that seeks to forcibly relocate individuals here against their will, or ours.
