Smokey Barnes’ blind man accused of gun and drugs possession to stand trial

TurksandCaicosIslands, February 12, 2024 – Sheena Mair, Human Rights attorney  has been assigned the case of Woodly ‘Smokey Barnes’ Victorian; the blind man who had been on remand for 15 months had his sufficiency hearing last Thursday February 9.

Late last year, Victorian made the Chief Justice aware of his struggle to secure a public defender and some of the challenges he faced as a blind man in prison including being denied social visits, having limited access to phone service and difficulties in getting around, even at meal times.

The defendant shared that he was forced to pay – with snacks – for other inmates to write his letters of complaint to the Court.

Wilkie Arthur, court correspondent reports that the Court has determined now that Victorian will stand trial for allegedly being in possession of a firearm, ammunition, cocaine and marijuana.

A plea and directions hearing is set for Thursday, February 22.  Bail was set at $20,000 with two sureties.

Jamaican gets multi-million dollar grant to enhance resilience

Jamaica got a 3 million US dollar grant from humanitarian charity organisation Direct Relief, as part of its mission to strengthen resilience in the Caribbean region. This is also an effort to enhance Healthcare systems and infrastructure throughout Jamaica in preparation for natural disasters as the organization renews its ongoing partnership with the island. This was announced by Direct Relief in an article on May 1.

Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana sign security agreement

To enhance and strengthen security in the Guiana Shield, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana on Monday April 29, signed a security common master plan following a meeting in George Town, as announced By President of Guyana Irfaan Ali on Facebook. Ali expressed that the agreement will hopefully enhance collaborations and relations between Suriname and French Guiana.

Grenada Prime Minister says there needs to be greater focus on coral health in the region’s universities.

The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, at the 2024 Sustainable Tourism Conference on April 22, expressed that Caribbean universities should be leading researchers for coral restoration as he addressed the importance of corals to the region’s capacity for tourism sustainability amid climate change

Regarding this, he called for more funding to encourage universities to create more marine experts, given the region’s vulnerability to climate change effects.
