#TurksandCaicos, December 21, 2023 – The Office of the Deputy Governor on Tuesday extended its condolences to the family of the late Cordaro Seymour who was murdered on Sunday. Loved ones, on Wednesday night, held a candlelight vigil to remember the son and father.
Seymour’s matter is yet another bizarre case during a weekend which was marred by tragic reports including a woman being kidnapped and beaten; a man suspected of being shot dead in a crossfire of bullets; another man who would be found dead after on Sunday going missing while out on a jet ski tour and his incident which resulted in two people being shot; sadly Seymour’s wounds would be fatal. Another driver of a separate vehicle, a woman, was struck and rushed to hospital for care.
Reports came blazing in to the newsroom shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday December 17 about the car crash and spray of gunfire.
Cordaro Seymour, 27 was said to be the driver of a Blue March when he tried to escape an onslaught of bullets in a wild shooting attack in the Bight. Those at the scene reported, “the small March was shoot up. The driver made it on the highway and ran right into a pole and appeared to have died.”
Police confirmed the murder and investigation in a Monday media statement.
“Around 5:11 pm yesterday (December 17th), the Police Control Room was alerted to a car accident along Leeward Highway, Providenciales.
Officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force and other emergency Teams were dispatched to the location, where they observed a male sitting motionless in the driver’s seat of the vehicle with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
This matter is under active investigation as a murder.
We are aware of rumours about multiple shooting incidents. We can confirm there was one shooting incident with two persons injured. One person succumbed to injuries.”
Wilkie Arthur, Court Correspondent for Magnetic Media visited the scene on Sunday night; from his vantage point and despite the rain, he watched as Crime Scene Investigators marked where they’d found spent shells. The many painted circles left on the ground were telling and supported what civilian observers say happened in the case of Seymour; a hail of bullets were recklessly fired upon the young man.
The DG’s office said: “Mr. Seymour joined the Turks and Caicos Islands Public Service in January 2022 as a Development Control Officer in the Physical Planning Department of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development. During his tenure, Mr. Seymour made invaluable contributions to the department’s efforts in improving the planning and future development of our islands.”
The motive for this vile shooting remains unknown at this point but the grief and loss of another cherished loved one continues to be a bitter pill for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The string of unrelenting violence resulted in a special convening of the National Security Council, which is headed by the Governor and Premier and a press conference is called for Friday December 22, 2023 at Police Headquarters beginning at 10 a.m.
“We remember and honour Mr. Seymour, as a dedicated and respected member of our public service. We will continue to pray for the family’s comfort and peace during this most difficult time.”
Cordaro Seymour is the 22nd homicide for the Turks and Caicos Islands this year.
