#TurksandCaicos, June 12, 2023 – Evidence in a serious case of alleged sexual assault  remains unpresented to the defendant’s attorney, in a matter dating back to 2021 and the presiding judge is not pleased with progress in the matter.

The Honourable Lady Justice Tanya Lobban Jackson on Thursday June 8, 2023 expressed her dissatisfaction on how the court gave the Crown certain directions, as it relates to important pieces of disclosure evidence to be given to Counsel for the accused Lara Maroof Misick, from early this year.

However, in court on June 8, 2023 at pre-trial review hearing (PTR), counsel for the defendant has yet to receive the material evidence as ordered by the Court.

The lady justice told Nayasha Hatmin, Public Prosecutor that she is going make a further order to disclose, as this trial is fixed to begin next month on July 17, 2023.

Mrs. Hatmin then advised the court that she does not have conduct of this matter but was only holding for Enjaleek Dickenson who was unavailable on the morning of the PTR.

The judge then ordered at the next PTR hearing for the conduct Counsel to be present as she ( the Hon Judge ) and Counsel for the accused have some queries regarding this matter that only she may be able to answer.

The teenager, accused in the case is charged with a number of sexual offences including drugging and raping a young female in August 2021.

Other adults were initially arrested when the report was initially made but, they were subsequently released without charge.

RISE IN AI-GENERATED IMAGE SCAMS TARGETING THE PUBLIC WITH FALSE GOVERNMENT STORIES

Published

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, 9th April 2025- The Office of the Premier and Public Policy is once again urging the public to remain vigilant following reports of fraudulent social media accounts falsely impersonating the Premier, Cabinet Ministers, former Government Officials and Senior Government Executive Members through the use of AI-generated images and video clips.

These narratives are intentionally designed to engage your attention, elicit emotional responses, and encourage further exploration through clicking. They are nothing more than clickbait, part of a larger scam operation.

It is particularly troubling that these posts present themselves as credible media sources, such as TC Weekly News, in order to enhance their authenticity and mislead the public into accepting the stories as legitimate.

The public is strongly advised to exercise caution and refrain from sharing, liking, or engaging with posts of this nature. It is imperative not to click on any links, as doing so may compromise your privacy, disseminate misinformation, or potentially expose your devices to harmful content.

What You Can Do:

  • Report suspicious posts immediately on the platform where they appear.
  • Verify information only through trusted, official government channels and recognized media sources.
  • Do not click on outrageous headlines or AI-generated images, especially those involving government officials or public figures.
  • Warn others in your family and community.

The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands takes this matter seriously and is actively working with relevant authorities to identify the sources of these posts and hold those responsible accountable.

Darco Yard Killing of Jacques Joseph, Hard-Working Family Man

Monday, April 7th, 2025 – Turks and Caicos Islands – He was a husband and family man. He was an honest, hard-working man, according to employees at Point Grace Resort, where he left before arriving at home in Darco Yard, Wheeland of Blue Hills, Providenciales, and was ambushed by waiting gunmen from the bushes and killed.

According to Police and residents in the area, four masked men, they believed, were waiting in nearby bushes, the arrival of 59-year old JACQUES JOSEPH.  Joseph was not even able to exit the vehicle before bullets rang out throughout the neighborhood and beyond; described as terrifying for all who heard the deafening shots.

Police and Eagle Legal News arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting; prompted by numerous calls and messages of shots fired in Wheeland. There was screaming and hollering as the shooters made their escape; leaving behind a heart-rending situation.

The assailants fled on foot into the nearby bushes, the same area from which they had emerged to conduct their deadly attack. Authorities have stated that this appears to be a targeted killing.

This incident is believed to be the 10th murder in the Turks and Caicos Islands for 2025. It occurred after 6 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made.

Authorities are exploring all possible motives as they gather evidence. However, a significant challenge they face is the unwillingness of witnesses to come forward. Many residents in the area have expressed fear of retaliation or simply refuse to speak about what they saw.

Eagle Legal spoke with JACQUES’ wife, who remains in shock and disbelief. She expressed her devastation, stating that she could not understand why anyone would want to kill her husband, describing him as a truly loving and hardworking man.

JACQUES was employed at Point Grace, and his colleagues echoed similar sentiments. Some staff members, who wished to remain anonymous, described him as a diligent and kind individual. They lamented the senseless violence that took his life so brutally.

Despite the attack taking place in a residential area, most residents have remained tight-lipped. While some admitted to witnessing the shooting, they refused to cooperate with authorities. Police suspect that fear of retaliation may be preventing people from providing crucial information that could help solve the case.

Videos and photos from Eagle Legal News showing the area where the shooting occurred, along with a photo of the victim provided by his family were posted to our Facebook page. Authorities continue to appeal to the public for assistance in bringing those responsible to justice.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, with many calling for increased security measures and justice for JACQUES JOSEPH.
