Former Police Commissioner makes broken-hearted plea for drivers to ‘Buckle Up’ after son dies in traffic accident

#TurksandCaicos, August 4, 2022 – Edward Hall, a former TCI police commissioner says facing the crowd at his son’s candlelight vigil to warn Islanders about driving safety was “one of the hardest statements” he has made in his life but he found it pertinent to do so anyway.

“The appeal to you tonight is to not allow Ernold’s death to be in vain. Young people in this country need to understand rules are made for your protection and you need to protect and be careful with your life or you leave a lot of hurt people behind,” he said tearfully.

While Hall acknowledged the police initially responded positively about pushing out the message he said  “I thought that the Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police Force of whom I was apart for some 36 years would have embraced the opportunity to do so.—- I don’t want this opportunity to pass and that’s why I am here to launch an appeal.”

Ernold Hall died on July 2 in a car accident in North Caicos. The senior Hall explained that as an officer he had worked in road traffic more than any other department and had what he describes as the misfortune to visit several accident scenes and his sons was devastating.

“When I got the call that there had been an accident and Ernold was involved my heart shifted because this guy had 9 lives and he was definitely on the tenth,” forcing back tears, the former Commissioner described the aftermath of the call.

“I drove to the scene along with my son and when I saw the car I knew it couldn’t be good but given the training I had I went and examined the scene— I saw him in the car and I saw the position he was in and I knew this was not good.”

Hall said he had been concerned even before the call noticing his son’s missing car after they had buried a family member only hours before. He described feeling hopeful that the driver’s side of the car wasn’t as damaged.  That was until he noticed the position of his child’s neck but something else was even more heartbreaking for the former traffic cop.

“I saw that the seatbelt that he was supposed to be wearing around him was in the back of him. I told him before when I was riding with him we have to do this right— this seatbelt when you get in an accident could save your life. I am of the view that if Ernold had his seatbelt on he might have been hurt but he would not have died.”

Often breaking down, emotions raw the night before he would bury his son, there was the plea to the gathered and those sharing his statement with us and over social media.  The former top officer was especially targeting younger islanders with his message.

“I am broken but I am also angry because if he (Ernold) had the seatbelt on he would’ve been alive today and you who are left behind we’re going to be placing some signals on that corner asking you to put your seatbelts on because this is where Ernold died. Put on your seatbelts! It’s the law and it can save your life.

Please do it for your family, do it for your children.”

Bahama Brass Band Invitation Sparks Heritage Debate Ahead of TCI Constitutional Holiday

Published

on

Turks and Caicos, August 20, 2026 – The planned participation of the Bahama Brass Band in the Turks and Caicos Islands’ inaugural Constitutional Holiday celebrations on August 30 has sparked public debate over culture, heritage and the historical contributions of Turks and Caicos Islanders abroad.

Organizers defended the invitation, saying the band’s inclusion is intended to highlight the deep historical ties between the two countries and honor Turks and Caicos men who helped establish and develop the institution in Grand Bahama.

According to the organizers, the Bahama Brass Band began in 1955 in Pine Ridge, Freeport, with Turks and Caicos Islanders, including the late Deacon Reuben Hall Sr. of Middle Caicos and Jenkins Williams and Mervin Hendfield of North Caicos, among those who helped build its foundation. The band eventually grew to more than 50 men.

The organizers also pointed to the participation of Turks and Caicos men in The Bahamas’ Independence celebrations on July 10, 1973, arguing that their contributions became part of Bahamian history while maintaining strong connections to their homeland.

Supporters say bringing the band home represents an opportunity to honor those pioneers, showcase their regional influence and expose younger generations to an important part of Turks and Caicos history.

However, concerns raised publicly described the invitation as potentially disrespectful to local culture and heritage. Organizers acknowledged those concerns, apologizing to anyone who felt overlooked or offended, while maintaining that no disrespect was intended.

The committee said the event should ultimately unite rather than divide, presenting the band’s history as evidence of the reach and resilience of Turks and Caicos heritage.

NASSAU, Bahamas — Caribbean Bottling Company (CBC), local producers of Dasani products, proudly sponsored the fifth annual, Caribbean Hoopfest.

The tournament brings together Bahamian high school basketball teams and visiting teams from the United States for a competitive showcase at the Kendal G. L. Isaacs Gymnasium.  Following its inaugural year at the Kendal G. L. Isaacs gym and last year’s event at Loyola Hall, the tournament returned to the Kendal G. L. Isaacs gym this year.

During the weekend tournament, CBC kept athletes well hydrated with in-kind donations of Dasani Water, Powerade and Minute Maid Juices.

During the tournament’s final day, CBC provided additional support by offering Sprite No Sugar samples and inviting attendees to participate in its Spin the Wheel for a chance to win exciting prizes.

CBC was proud to support this incredible event, which provides young Bahamian athletes with valuable exposure to U.S. basketball scouts and coaches. This opportunity gives them the chance to earn scholarships, continue their education, and pursue their basketball careers in the United States.

Event organizer, Donald Francois shared his appreciation for CBC’s support.

“I want to express our sincere appreciation for Caribbean Bottling Company, who has been a tremendous supporter and an important part of the success of our program. Without CBC’s support, Caribbean Hoop Fest would not be able to function at the level it does today. And without Caribbean Hoop Fest, we would not have been able to provide the opportunities that have helped young Bahamian athletes gain exposure and pursue educational opportunities in the United States,” he expressed.

Since the program’s inception, several Bahamian student-athletes have been selected for scholarship opportunities, highlighting the tournament’s growing impact on the development and advancement of young basketball talent in The Bahamas.

They are: Kelvin McDowells – Guard, Wodson Antoine – Power Forward, Justin Lafleur – Guard and Sean John – Guard.

After another successful edition of the tournament, Francois shared what he hopes he and Caribbean Bottling Company can achieve in the future.

“Our vision is bigger than basketball. We want to use the platform of Caribbean Hoop Fest to educate, develop, and create opportunities for young people and their families throughout the Bahamas. With individuals and organizations committed to our mission, we believe we can continue to grow the program and make an even greater impact,” Francois said.
