TCI: Premier calls urgent community meeting after site visit to problematic Provo dump

Published

on

#Providenciales, October 3, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The Premier has toured the Providenciales Landfill and agrees that it is time for a community meeting with residents of the area, the meeting is set for this Thursday October 3, 2019 at Kingdom Dominion Church International in Millennium Heights.

The tour of the dump site, which is blamed for toxic smoke polluting the air quality in the north western end of the island, happened on Tuesday October 1, according to a statement this morning issued by the Office of the Premier.

It was explained that during the site visit there was a report from site management on recent changes in daily operations given the challenges re-surfacing.

The challenges, to which the Premier refers, are coming from spot fires on the dump and possibly illegally lit fires in bushes surrounding the dump site and the overwhelming smoke and sickness these are creating.

The Premier, who was joined on the site tour by the Member of Parliament for the area, Delroy Williams offered that, “The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all residents of the islands and as previously stated, are aware of the issues associated with the operation of this particular landfill site and have committed to finding a resolve.”

While the community meeting will be an opportunity for residents to express their grievances and ask questions, Premier Robinson said the plan is to bring a team from the Ministry of Health and Department of Environment and Coastal Resources to give an update on improvement works at the waste facility.

The meeting will be held at the Kingdom Dominion International Church located in Second Phase on Thursday, October 3rd 2019 at 6:30pm, said the Office of the Premier.

Bahama Brass Band Invitation Sparks Heritage Debate Ahead of TCI Constitutional Holiday

Published

on

Turks and Caicos, August 20, 2026 – The planned participation of the Bahama Brass Band in the Turks and Caicos Islands’ inaugural Constitutional Holiday celebrations on August 30 has sparked public debate over culture, heritage and the historical contributions of Turks and Caicos Islanders abroad.

Organizers defended the invitation, saying the band’s inclusion is intended to highlight the deep historical ties between the two countries and honor Turks and Caicos men who helped establish and develop the institution in Grand Bahama.

According to the organizers, the Bahama Brass Band began in 1955 in Pine Ridge, Freeport, with Turks and Caicos Islanders, including the late Deacon Reuben Hall Sr. of Middle Caicos and Jenkins Williams and Mervin Hendfield of North Caicos, among those who helped build its foundation. The band eventually grew to more than 50 men.

The organizers also pointed to the participation of Turks and Caicos men in The Bahamas’ Independence celebrations on July 10, 1973, arguing that their contributions became part of Bahamian history while maintaining strong connections to their homeland.

Supporters say bringing the band home represents an opportunity to honor those pioneers, showcase their regional influence and expose younger generations to an important part of Turks and Caicos history.

However, concerns raised publicly described the invitation as potentially disrespectful to local culture and heritage. Organizers acknowledged those concerns, apologizing to anyone who felt overlooked or offended, while maintaining that no disrespect was intended.

The committee said the event should ultimately unite rather than divide, presenting the band’s history as evidence of the reach and resilience of Turks and Caicos heritage.

Salt Cay Water Shortage Unresolved as Residents Question Promised Relief

Published

on

SALT CAY — Residents say Salt Cay’s prolonged water shortage remains unresolved, with no visible activity or relief from the measures Government said would be advanced last week.

The crisis began in June after a critical filter failed at the island’s reverse osmosis plant, severely disrupting local water production. Residents told Magnetic Media Tuesday morning that neither the replacement filter nor the promised bulk shipment of emergency water appeared to have arrived.

Minister of Innovation, Technology and Energy E. Jay Saunders, however, said the filter is already on Salt Cay.

“The RO filter is on Salt Cay and it’s being installed,” Saunders told Magnetic Media.

The large emergency water shipment has not materialised. Saunders said transporting more than 1,000 gallons in a single container requires a barge, and officials are still attempting to source one.

Government had previously indicated that it would try to deliver up to 2,500 gallons to partially replenish Salt Cay’s depleted storage tanks while repairs continued.

Saunders had initially projected that the RO plant would be fully operational by August 19. He now says the system is expected to return to full operation “in a few days.”

For residents, however, the immediate reality remains unchanged: the shortage continues, the bulk water has not arrived and the promised relief is not yet flowing.
