ALERT # 9 ON POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY, FRIDAY, 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019

#Nassau, September 13, 2019 – Bahamas – …TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMS NEAR THE BAHAMAS…

…FORECAST TO BECOME A TROPICAL STORM ON SATURDAY….

BASED ON ADVICE FROM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER LOCATED IN FLORIDA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ISLANDS OF THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS WHICH INCLUDES: ELEUTHERA, ANDROS, NEW PROVIDENCE, ABACO, GRAND BAHAMA, BIMINI AND THE BERRY ISLANDS.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD AFFECT THE MENTIONED ISLANDS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

AT 5PM EDT, THE CENTER OF THE DISTURBANCE WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 26.5 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 75.0 DEGREES WEST OR ABOUT 180 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF NEW PROVIDENCE; OR ABOUT 140 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF MARSH HARBOUR, ABACO; OR ABOUT 240 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA. THIS SYSTEM IS MOVING AT 8 MPH TOWARDS THE NORTHWEST.  A TURN TOWARDS THE NORTH-NORTWEST IS EXPECTED ON SATURDAY. ON THIS FORECAST TRACK, THE SYSTEM IS ANTICIPATED TO MOVE VERY NEAR THE NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS TONIGHT AND SATURDAY, AND EAST OF THE EAST COAST OF FLORIDA DURING SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 30 MILES PER HOUR WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  PRELIMINARY DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE PLANE INDICATE THAT THE DEPRESSION IS BECOMING BETTER ORGANIZED AND IS ANTICIPATED THAT A TROPICAL STORM WILL LIKELY FORM LATER TODAY OR TONIGHT.   

TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD BE EXPECTED WITHIN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS BY LATER TODAY.

THE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE TOTAL RAINFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES WITH ISOLATED MAXIMUM AMOUNTS OF 6 INCHES OVER THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS THROUGH SUNDAY.  THIS WILL RESULT IN LOCALIZED FLOODING IN LOW-LYING AREAS.

THIS SYSTEM IS NOT EXPECTED TO PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT STORM SURGE.

THE NEXT ALERT WILL BE ISSUED AT 9PM EDT ON FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019.
