#Providenciales, April 26, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Residents shopping at Graceway Supermarkets around the TCI are being rewarded for changing their habit of depending upon single plastic bags with a blue token which will lead to financial support to one of three Grace Bay Community charities.
Since Monday, Earth Day, shoppers have been receiving the tokens and dropping them into clear coloured canisters and the choices are the Leeward Highway Community Clean Up, the Snap Centre Playground Restoration and a Grand Turk Community Clean Up.
Leading the way, based on the tokens dropped into the collection columns, Snap Centre is clearly the favorite.
The supermarket chain is giving one token per reusable bag, positively reinforcing the action of eliminating the need for single use plastic bags.
The single use bags, as of May 1, 2019 will be illegal in the Turks and Caicos; all stores will be expected to stop issuing the ‘toxic’ bags.
On April 15, 2019 importation of the single use plastic bags was banned at the borders.
