Jamaica poised to become region’s Top Cruise Destination

Published

Montego Bay, Jamaica, February 8, 2017 – Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, says Jamaica’s hosting of the six largest ships in the world is proof that the island is poised to become the region’s number one cruise destination.

Mr. Bartlett, who recently returned from a five-day trip to Nassau, Bahamas, where he attended an important meeting of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Council of Tourism Ministers and Commissioners, said having the world’s largest cruise vessels simultaneously calling on a single destination is a rarity and something of which Jamaicans should be proud.

“This speaks of the unwavering support the cruise lines have for Jamaica and our tourism product,” he told JIS News.  “We have to remember that we are in a very competitive region where these ships can go anywhere. There is nothing in the rule book that says they have to come to Jamaica. The fact that we have these large and expensive mega liners calling at our ports should tell us that we have come a long way and should continue to build on our tourism offerings,” he noted further.

cruise-shipCurrently, the Port of Falmouth is hosting the three largest cruise ships in the world – Harmony of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas, which are all Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL) vessels.  Ocho Rios is hosting the Norwegian Epic, the Norwegian Pearl and the Carnival Vista.  A fourth ship in the RCCL’s Oasis luxury fleet, which is under construction and set to replace Harmony of the Seas as the biggest ship in the world, could be added to Jamaica’s itinerary in November 2018.

Mr. Bartlett pointed out that the Falmouth Port, which is easily the largest in the region, has the capacity to accommodate all the Oasis class vessels.  “Popular destinations like the Cayman Islands, where at best the ships would have to be tendered, can make no such claim.  The onus is now on us to create the kind of environment where we can fully capitalize on having these large vessels calling on our ports,” he pointed out.

It is very important that we make their stay as enjoyable as possible where they can become future stopover visitors,” he said.

The work in Falmouth, being carried out by the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), includes cleaning, landscaping, planting of flowers, social and community outreach, and the enforcement of public-order statutes.  Minister Bartlett noted the recent meeting with cruise line owners in Miami, led by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, was “a turning point” for the island’s cruise sector.

“That was the meeting where Mickey Arison, the owner of Carnival Cruises, the biggest cruise line in the world, made the point that it was the first time he could recall having a Jamaican Prime Minister attending one of their meetings and also the importance of having discussions at that level,” Mr. Bartlett explained.   “I personally left that meeting knowing that the onus is now on us to deliver and not to disappoint,” he added.

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands: The Crown Land Unit, with coordination and support from the Informal Settlements Unit (ISU), conducted a multi-agency enforcement exercise in the Five Cays area on Thursday, September 17, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to address the illegal occupation and unauthorised use of Crown land.

The exercise brought together representatives from the Crown Land Unit, ISU and the Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force. Security for the exercise was provided by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. Inspections were conducted across several parcels of Crown land throughout Five Cays, where instances of illegal occupation and unauthorised use had been identified.

During the exercise, a total of forty (40) Section 22 Notices of Unauthorised Occupation were served in accordance with the provisions of the Crown Land Ordinance. The notices related to various forms of unauthorised occupation and use of Crown land, including incomplete structures, shipping containers, derelict vehicles, trailer chassis, building materials and other items.

Where persons were not present, notices were affixed to the relevant structures or items. The exercise forms part of the Crown Land Unit’s continuing efforts to prevent squatting and encroachment on Crown land and to ensure that identified instances of unauthorised occupation are appropriately addressed.

The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands reminds the public that Crown land must not be occupied, developed or otherwise used without lawful authority.

The Crown Land Unit, supported by the ISU and its other partner agencies, will continue to identify and address instances of illegal occupation of Crown land across the Turks and Caicos Islands. Persons affected by notices issued during enforcement exercises are encouraged to comply with the requirements outlined and to seek guidance from the relevant authorities where necessary.

Bahamas Issues Cybersecurity Alert Over Akira Ransomware Threat

Published

on

Nassau, The Bahamas, October 22, 2026 — The National Computer Incident Response Team of The Bahamas (CIRT-BS) has issued a cybersecurity advisory warning businesses, government institutions and other organisations about the growing threat posed by Akira ransomware, a cybercriminal operation capable of stealing sensitive information, disrupting networks and demanding ransom payments.

Active since March 2023, Akira operates through a Ransomware-as-a-Service model, with affiliates exploiting weaknesses in computer networks to gain unauthorised access.

Once inside, attackers can steal confidential data, disable recovery systems and encrypt files, preventing organisations from accessing critical information.

Particularly concerning is Akira’s use of double extortion, threatening to publish stolen information unless victims pay. Some attacks involve data theft without encryption.

The October 22 advisory identifies vulnerabilities involving Cisco and SonicWall firewalls, VPN services, Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol, Veeam backup systems and outdated Windows and Linux operating systems. VMware ESXi and Nutanix AHV environments are also potential targets.

Attackers may exploit unpatched software, stolen login credentials and inadequately secured remote-access applications, including AnyDesk and RustDesk.

Warning signs include unexpected administrator accounts, unusual remote logins, unauthorised software installations, suspicious backup activity, mass file changes and ransom notes.

CIRT-BS recommends immediate security updates, multifactor authentication, restricted remote access, stronger network monitoring and secure backups maintained separately from operational systems.

Organisations should also remove unnecessary internet exposure of remote desktop services, limit administrative privileges and regularly test backup restoration.

The advisory does not identify any confirmed Akira attack against a Bahamian organisation but highlights vulnerabilities that could expose institutions to serious financial and operational disruption.

Cybersecurity incidents can be reported to CIRT-BS at soc@cirt.bs or through its official website.
