It is now illegal to smoke in public places in the Turks and Caicos, and this past Tuesday, Director of the Substance Abuse unit, Dr. Alicia Malcolm issued a special message to remind the country of the new laws.
“This new law provides for stringent guidelines for the manufacture, sale, promotion, advertising and sponsorship of tobacco and tobacco products and was designed specifically for the preservation and the protection of the lives of our people from the ill-effects associated with the use of tobacco.”
Every year the Turks and Caicos Islands participates in the global recognition of World No Tobacco Day. It was back in April that a Tobacco Control Ordinance came into effect to create smoke free zones throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.
It’s objective is to also prevent tobacco use by minors, regulate it’s use country wide and increase public awareness of the hazards of using tobacco products.
It has been reported by the World Health Organization that roughly six million preventable deaths occur globally due to the use of tobacco products and second hand smoking.
