Western Union announced on Wednesday, their continuation of money transfers from the US to Cuba on a small scale.  The company’s remittance services were halted in 2020 with restrictions put in place by Donald Trump.  Some of these restrictions have been loosened since the Biden Administration assumed power.

President of Western Union in North America, Gabriella Fitzgerald explained that their services are important to maintain the connection between US citizens and their families in Cuba.

“We are delighted to offer this critical connection once again for our customers.”

Online transactions will not be permitted during this test phase and a $2000 limit has been placed on transfers.  Money can only be picked up with a Cuban ID.

Cuba’s economy, which took a hit during the pandemic, was also significantly impacted by the closure of Western Union’s services.  Reopening remittance transactions will help the island and its residents to recover economically.
