Minister Moxey welcomes Housing Minister to Grand Bahama

#The Bahamas, November 16, 2021 – Minister Ginger Moxey welcomed Housing Minister JoBeth Coleby to Grand Bahama on Thursday, during her first official visit as Minister of Housing and Transport.

During the courtesy call at the Ministry for Grand Bahama, Minister Moxey said “it says a lot about what this government thinks about and will do for Grand Bahama Island. We’ve already had 10 Ministers grace our island. We know what Grand Bahama has experienced over the past few years, and so this administration will do all that it can to recover, rebuild and revolutionize this island.”

A native of Grand Bahama, Minister Coleby said it is important to see firsthand and visit the departments that fall under her Ministry. “It is also important that I check out some of the land here so I can see where we can do some work through the Department of Housing and make some more homeowners in Grand Bahama.”

Accompanying Minister Coleby were Permanent Secretary, Antoinette Thompson and newly appointed chairwoman of the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation, along with members of her technical team.

Other Ministers who have visited the island have been Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper; Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell; Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe; Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Michael Darville; Minister of Works and Utilities, the Hon. Alfred Sears; Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Hon. Myles Laroda; Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Mario Bowleg; Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting and Minister of State for the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle.

Minister Coleby visited the Mortgage Corporation and the Department of Housing before leaving for the Harold DegGregory Building, where the Ministry for Grand Bahama is housed.

“It is important for the people of Grand Bahama to understand that this government is serious about doing what it can to bring you back to a place that you knew prior to Hurricane Dorian and even better,” she said.

Bahamas economic growth

The Bahamas’ economy is in good standing according to reports from the Bahamas National Statistical Institute which released the Quarterly Gross Domestic Product Series. They indicate that quarterly GDP trends for 2023 saw increases compared to 2022, a sign of recovery from the Covid 19 pandemic.

The most significant increase was 9.9 percent in the first quarter of 2023, and the industries responsible for the growth include Accommodations and food, construction and Arts.

In just a few days, athletes from over fifty countries will converge in The Bahamas for the BTC World Athletic Relays Bahamas 24. C&W Communications, the parent company of BTC, is proud to be associated with this major event, which will see athletes from The Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago competing for a place in the upcoming Olympic games in Paris.

BTC has hosted a special event just for the Caribbean athletes, at the newly renovated Queen’s Staircase in Nassau, a recently renovated historic landmark visited by thousands of tourists each day. This event gave athletes the opportunity to unwind, mingle, and to learn more about each other right before the competition.

This is the fourth time that BTC and its parent company C&W Communications have title sponsored the world relays. The BTC World Athletic Relays will be held at the Thomas A. Robinson Track & Field Stadium from May 4-5, under the theme, “Chase the Sun, from Paradise to Paris.”
