#TheBahamas, February 25, 2021 – The Board of Trustees (BOT) of University of The Bahamas (UB) has launched the recruitment phase of the search for a new president by releasing a leadership profile for the position entitled, “The Presidential Opportunity at University of The Bahamas”.

The BOT-appointed Presidential Search Committee (PSC) is mounting a national and international search in order to attract the most qualified, competent and suitable candidate to lead UB through the next phase of its transformation.

Feedback gleaned from listening sessions with faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the wider community was integral in shaping the profile which outlines the competencies, qualifications and attributes of the next president. The ninth president of UB will be a dynamic and inclusive leader embodying a commitment to the values and traditions of the University, the profile states.

“The next president will be an effective and transformational team player who builds on the exceptional strengths of UB, including its mission to advance and expand access to higher education, promote academic freedom, drive national development, and build character through teaching, learning, research, scholarship, and service. The president will have a deep understanding of and appreciation for the culture of The Bahamas and will position the university for continued growth and success,” notes the profile.

In addition to possessing a terminal degree and a record of success as a leader in a higher education environment, top attributes relate to leadership, relationship building, fundraising, business acumen, and communication skills.

Among the major priorities outlined are increasing fundraising to meet critical needs; enhancing technological infrastructure for online and remote instruction; and building a more inclusive community of faculty, students, staff, and alumni. Others include aligning the academic curriculum with the needs of current and anticipated business models; enhancing internationalisation and adapting to global disruptions in higher education; and developing consensus around the University’s strategic plan.

The deadline for applications and nominations for the position of president of UB is 19 April 2021. The comprehensive presidential profile is accessible at https://www.agbsearch.com/searches/president-the-university-of-the-bahamas and on UB’s website at https://www.ub.edu.bs/presidential-opportunity/ .

The Board of Trustees has announced that current President Dr. Rodney D. Smith will not be seeking to renew his contract when it expires on 31st July 2022, indicating that President Smith has assured that he is committed to fulfilling his mandate and ensuring a smooth, collaborative transition in leadership.

The BOT appointed the PSC in November 2020 to establish the process by which the new president of the University will be selected and hired. The firm, AGB Search, which has conducted over 200 searches for presidents and chancellors of colleges, universities, university systems, and related associations and foundations is the search consultant.
