Minnis not going without a fight, issues firm statement

Published

on

Nassau, Bahamas, December 8, 2016 –  Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement:

“Today seven members of the Parliamentary Group of the Free National Movement delivered a letter to the Governor General, Dame Marguerite Pindling, withdrawing their support for me as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, and recommended the appointment of Mrs. Loretta Butler-Turner as Leader of the Opposition Members in Parliament. As a consequence of this, Mrs. Butler-Turner, if appointed by the Governor General, will, under the Constitution of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, have the responsibility for the conduct of Opposition Members in the House of Assembly. Let me be very clear that she is not and cannot as such be made leader of the Free National Movement. It is only the National Convention of the FNM or, in emergency circumstances, its Central Council that can elect the Leader of the Free National Movement.”

“By this action, the Free National Movement and The Bahamas as a whole were struck with a stunning usurpation of the very essence of the democratic right of a political organization to determine its Leadership. In my view, the actions of seven FNM Members of the House of Assembly – by invoking their privilege under the Constitution of The Bahamas to choose their Leader in the House of Assembly – is a direct affront to the democratic conventions and traditions of the Free National Movement. It is tradition that the Leader of the Party, if elected to the House of Assembly, has always been appointed Leader of the Opposition. Their action is a slap in the face of the Party, and a slap in the face of democracy!”

“In view of today’s events I, as the constitutionally elected Leader of the Free National Movement, wish to inform the Bahamian people that I now invite the seven MPs who were elected under the banner of the FNM, and who signed the letter to the Governor General, to do the Honourable thing and resign from the Free National Movement. Failing which, I have today recommended to the National Executive of the Party, and the Executive has unanimously voted in favour thereof, that the disciplinary provisions of Article 53 of the Constitution of the Free National Movement be invoked, and that if found to be required, a Disciplinary Tribunal be appointed and take whatever action it deems appropriate under the Constitution of the Free National Movement.”

Ministry of Education Representatives with Rubis and Top 3 Performers

The ceremony was held on Thursday, 16 July 2026, at the Blue Haven Resort, under the theme “Champions Today. AI Leaders Tomorrow.” It was hosted by the Ministry in collaboration with WizdomCRM.

Students across the Caribbean took part in the investment challenge, each beginning with a virtual portfolio of USD $25,000 and working to grow it through simulated investments on regional and international stock markets. The Turks and Caicos Islands emerged as the region’s top-performing territory, claiming the top six regional positions, securing 14 of the Caribbean’s Top 20 places, and placing four schools on the regional leaderboard. Leading the region was Marc Roubentz-Perceus of TCIPS Comprehensive High School, who grew his portfolio to USD $370,336.63. He was followed by Joshua Creese of Raymond Gardiner High School in second place, and Stendro Chalas of TCIPS Comprehensive High School in third. This success is not luck; it is the result of an ecosystem built by students, teachers, parents, school leaders and partners who continue to invest in educational excellence. As we look ahead, the Ministry is in active discussions with WizdomCRM to expand access to its AI-powered learning tools, including Super AI, the AI Tutor, the Plagiarism Checker and the Grammar Checker, so that our young people are equipped with the future-ready skills they need to succeed.”

The Ministry extends sincere appreciation to the dedicated teachers who mentored the students, and to Rubis Turks and Caicos, whose sponsorship provided the cash prizes awarded to the top three regional champions. ANDY BURNHAM, NEW UK PM’S FIRST ORDER: LOWER THE COST OF LIVING

Published

Britain’s new Prime Minister launches his administration with tax relief aimed at easing pressure on household budgets as affordability becomes a defining issue for governments worldwide.

By Deandrea Hamilton | Magnetic Media

LONDON, England — Andy Burnham has wasted little time signaling a new direction for the United Kingdom, making the cost of living the first priority of his administration with a plan to reduce household electricity bills through tax relief.

The newly elected Prime Minister announced that Value Added Tax (VAT) will be removed from domestic electricity bills beginning October 1, describing the measure as part of a broader effort to make everyday life more affordable for working families. The move fulfills a key campaign promise and marks an early shift in the government’s economic agenda.

Burnham inherits a nation still grappling with stubborn inflation, rising household expenses and years of political turnover. His opening policy signals an intention to focus on practical measures that deliver immediate financial relief while restoring confidence in government.

The announcement also resonates across the Caribbean, where affordability remains a pressing concern. In the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Government has just concluded its one-time cost-of-living assistance programme for qualifying residents. While the approaches differ, both reflect a growing recognition that easing financial pressure on households has become one of the defining challenges facing governments today.

His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has declared three days of national mourning following the tragic loss of lives in the M.V. Barima incident, as the nation continues to grieve alongside the families and communities affected.

The period of national mourning will be observed from Wednesday, July 22, through Friday, July 24, 2026, in honour of the victims of the tragedy. During this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all Government buildings and other appropriate locations across the country.

As part of the observances, Wednesday, July 22, has been designated a National Day of Prayer. A National Day of Prayer and Remembrance will be held at the Kingston Seawall in Georgetown, bringing together citizens in solidarity to honour the lives lost and offer support to grieving families.

The programme of remembrance will continue with a Night of Reflection and Prayer in Port Kaituma on Thursday, July 23, followed by another observance in Mabaruma on Friday, July 24.

The government is also encouraging religious organisations, civic groups and citizens throughout Guyana to organise candlelight vigils and moments of prayer during the three days as the nation collectively reflects on the tragedy and pays tribute to the victims. The declaration of national mourning underscores the government’s commitment to standing with the bereaved families and affected communities as Guyana mourns one of the country’s most heartbreaking maritime tragedies.
