UN 77th session closes, new president takes office, 78th session opened.

The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly held its final meeting and president elect Dennis Francis, permanent representative of Trinidad and Tobago, to the United Nations, took his seat in office as the 78th UN General Assembly President; Saba Korosi, the 77th President now exits office.

At the meetings on September 5th, Francis underwent the formal process of going into office, that is the taking of the oath of office to make official, his seating.

He starts off swearing to morally perform his duties.

He said, “I solemnly declare that I shall truthfully perform my duties and exercise the functions entrusted to me as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations in all the loyalty, discretion and conscience, and that I shall discharge these functions and regulate my conduct with the interest of the United Nations, [only inview] and in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations,” adding,” and the code of ethics for the President of the General Assembly, without seeking or accepting any instruction in regard to the performance of my duties, from any government or other source, external to the organization.”

Ending the firmly delivered oath, Francis paused and later ended with ” so help me God.”

His taking of office is with immediate effect as his role started the same day, opening the new 78th session at 3 p.m according to the organization.

Jamaican gets multi-million dollar grant to enhance resilience

Jamaica got a 3 million US dollar grant from humanitarian charity organisation Direct Relief, as part of its mission to strengthen resilience in the Caribbean region. This is also an effort to enhance Healthcare systems and infrastructure throughout Jamaica in preparation for natural disasters as the organization renews its ongoing partnership with the island. This was announced by Direct Relief in an article on May 1.

Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana sign security agreement

To enhance and strengthen security in the Guiana Shield, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana on Monday April 29, signed a security common master plan following a meeting in George Town, as announced By President of Guyana Irfaan Ali on Facebook. Ali expressed that the agreement will hopefully enhance collaborations and relations between Suriname and French Guiana.

Grenada Prime Minister says there needs to be greater focus on coral health in the region’s universities.

The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, at the 2024 Sustainable Tourism Conference on April 22, expressed that Caribbean universities should be leading researchers for coral restoration as he addressed the importance of corals to the region’s capacity for tourism sustainability amid climate change

Regarding this, he called for more funding to encourage universities to create more marine experts, given the region’s vulnerability to climate change effects.
