Women’s Conference to Focus on Power of Personal Storytelling

Published

NASSAU, BAHAMAS (May 26th, 2023) – Exuma native Shem Bodie Neilly is giving back to the Bahamian community in a special way this summer. In less than two weeks, women will gather for “Life’s Chapter Real Talk” at Margaritaville Beach Resort during an intimate conference under the theme #NoBreaksJustPowerHer.

Through her non-profit organization, Ladies With Chapters, Neilly is committed to using the power of stories to inspire women of various ages. The event, which will be hosted by local talent Rika C., is a platform for participants to have discussions, be empowered, and leave feeling motivated.

“With all the demands that society has placed on women, we often find ourselves overwhelmingly shaken, broken, shattered, tried, and tested. We rarely have the opportunity to recharge and reset ourselves. It’s events like these that help to pour into our cups, empty or half full. We all need it,” said Neilly.

Specialty speakers include international guests such as Secily Wilson, Michelle Cadore, Whitney House, Rosena Duncanson, and Christina Burrows-Cleare.

Neilly noted, “When women step out into the world, many of us are only seen for our outward appearance. However, we all share something special, we all have a story. Our lives are made up of many chapters.”

Neilly added, “Ladies With Chapters was cultivated from the humble upbringing of my life. I continue to challenge myself professionally and personally. I’ve pushed through many obstacles and was faced with many life adversities to be where I am today. My passion and purpose have allowed me to use my voice to help inspire women, building a platform so they too can have a voice to share their story. Most importantly reminding them that there is strength in vulnerability and that each story is meant to be shared. Stories have strength and they too can concur and persevere.”

Though now based in Orlando, Florida, Neilly explained that it was important to her to host the conference in The Bahamas.

“As a Bahamian woman, I know firsthand how our strength can be tested.  We rarely have the opportunity to recharge, reset and pour into ourselves. Today, maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes a lot of resilience and willpower and I am happy to play a small role in helping to reenergize and reinvigorate women.”

Also aware of the heavy price tag usually associated with women’s events, Neilly was likewise committed to making the conference, which will feature a buffet-style dinner, affordable.

“An extravagant and elegant event can be so out of reach for the women who need it most. My goal is to create an empowering and inspiring event at a reasonable cost but with the same high-quality speakers and atmosphere”, she said.

The theme #NoBreaksJustPowerHer relates to a woman being able to tap into the power that lies within her. It means using personal power and is a reminder that our strength is within us, to keep going and never quit on our God-given purpose. It also tugs on a woman’s ability to identify what her purpose is and how to tap into it.

The conference will be a channel for “real, deep talk and personal discussions”. While there will be a keynote speaker and panel, participants will be able to ask questions and give feedback as they learn. All women over the age of 18, but especially between 25-30 years old are encouraged to attend. Those above the 30-year-old mark are likewise invited to not only gain from the conference but can connect with those younger and share key life lessons, and how they have conquered.

Neilly has given numerous complimentary conference tickets to women in the community including senior students of Doris Johnson Senior High School. Persons interested in the Sunday, June 4th conference can purchase tickets by visiting https://LWC_NoBreaksJustPowerHer2023.eventbrite.com. The event will additionally feature a  3-day resort stay grand prize, other door prizes, surprises, entertainment, and a disc jockey.

The #NoBreaksJustPowerHer women’s conference will allow participants to exemplify the strength that comes with being vulnerable and recognize how pushing through each obstacle shapes a brighter future. No matter the age, guest speakers and participants alike will be able to inspire and uplift each other through stories of adversity and perseverance.

After resounding success in the Bahamas, hit play ‘March On, The Story of Us’ has been inundated with requests to take their show on the road, and the first location they’ll be hitting is Providenciales Turks and Caicos with tickets on sale this weekend from May 3 to 5.

Magnetic Media spoke to Gea Pierre, playwright, who told us the TCI was a natural first choice for the cast and crew.

“We started ‘March On’ in November 2023 and it was really an opportunity for us to tell a story, the story of the Bahamas and to encompass the nations that we have an amazing relationship with like the Turks and Caicos,” she continued “We really got a lot of people calling [for the play] from [the TCI], so much so we really had to pay attention.”

The response to ‘March On’ at home and abroad was overwhelming.

“To say it went well is an understatement, even before we opened we got calls from Canada, from all over the US with people wanting us to come and perform.”

And take the show on the road they did! Gea and her team have launched “March On: The Tour” and will be in Providenciales to perform on May 10th and 11th. It’s the first of a number of stops which include Nassau and several US locations.

A ticket booth will be set up from today, Friday May 3 in the foyer of IGA grocery store beginning at 1 p.m. Friday and then again all day on Saturday, allowing residents to purchase with cash.

Online tickets are available for purchase with credit cards. Then the full team returns on Friday, May 11 for the actual showing at 8 pm and their two showings on Saturday at 4pm and 8 pm. The venue is Brayton Hall, Providenciales under the patronage of Washington Misick, TCI Premier and First Lady Delthia Misick.

Describing the close familial relationships between the TCI and the Bahamas, for many on the crew it will be like coming home Gea told us, for others it will be a treat to visit for the first time, the places that their grandparents described.

Tickets are only $60 for general seating and $75 for VIP seating.

Gea maintained that the team wanted to keep the show as accessible to residents as possible.

As for why you should come out and see the play, other than the great price point:

“The way that people have responded to it is non stoplaughter, people have been moved to tears because there’s some emotion. It does not only lend to Bahamians. It’s a family drama, and anyone who’s ever been a part of a family is going to get something out of it, and something moving.”
