Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce wins Sportswoman of the Year 2022

#Jamaica, May 10, 2023 – Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, five time world Jamaican 100m champion was named the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year for 2022.

The awarding of the title follows a successful 2022 season where Fraser-Pryce won her fifth world title in a championship record of 10.67 seconds, as well as her fifth Diamond League title. Additionally, she made history being the first woman to run under 10.7 seconds for the 100m, seven times in the same season, adding to her list of great accomplishments over the years.

She is the third Jamaican athlete to win the award following Elaine Thompson-Herah, who won it in 2022 for her 2021 success and Usain Bolt  who won it in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2017.

Fraser-Pryce expressed that she was “really honored” to be awarded the prize on Monday May 8th, 2023 at the Lauren’s World Sports Awards in Paris.

She added that she hopes her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to Jamaican girls with big dreams, that with belief and hard work there is no limit.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, reacting to her win said, Fraser-Pryce has proved that she is indeed “one of the greatest athlètes of all time.” He added that “we are honored to have her represent Jamaica on the world stage.”

Jamaican gets multi-million dollar grant to enhance resilience

Jamaica got a 3 million US dollar grant from humanitarian charity organisation Direct Relief, as part of its mission to strengthen resilience in the Caribbean region. This is also an effort to enhance Healthcare systems and infrastructure throughout Jamaica in preparation for natural disasters as the organization renews its ongoing partnership with the island. This was announced by Direct Relief in an article on May 1.

Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana sign security agreement

To enhance and strengthen security in the Guiana Shield, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana on Monday April 29, signed a security common master plan following a meeting in George Town, as announced By President of Guyana Irfaan Ali on Facebook. Ali expressed that the agreement will hopefully enhance collaborations and relations between Suriname and French Guiana.

Grenada Prime Minister says there needs to be greater focus on coral health in the region’s universities.

The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, at the 2024 Sustainable Tourism Conference on April 22, expressed that Caribbean universities should be leading researchers for coral restoration as he addressed the importance of corals to the region’s capacity for tourism sustainability amid climate change

Regarding this, he called for more funding to encourage universities to create more marine experts, given the region’s vulnerability to climate change effects.
