Government, “committed to enhancing access to safe and secure dwellings, for all Bahamians, on all islands,” says Prime Minister Davis

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. Philip Davis said that his Government is laying the foundation for future success for Bahamians, through home ownership.

“We are building houses, but even more importantly, we are building communities. We are empowering families, and we are levelling the playing field to create a fairer Bahamas,” declared the prime minister.                                                                                                                                              He made the statement during the Ministry of Housing and Urban Renewal’s New Homeowners & Rent-to-Own Key Presentation Ceremony held at Lynden Pindling Estates on Friday, March 21, 2025.                                                                                                                                                                                                     “In presenting these keys today, we are doing more than realizing the human rights of Bahamians: we are laying the foundation for future success,” said the prime minister.

He added, “I can only imagine the heights to which you all will soar as new homeowners.  And make no mistake; our administration does not intend to stop here. We are committed to enhancing access to safe and secure dwellings, for all Bahamians, on all islands.   We are building hundreds more homes across our archipelago.”

Sir Lynden Pindling Estates named after the ‘Father of the Nation’ was formerly known as Pinewood Gardens Phase II, and has provided affordable housing solutions to Bahamians for over four decades.

In 2000, Sir Lynden personally approved the name change, and due to declining health he participated in the name-change ceremony via telephone. The streets within the subdivision have been named in honour of his family, most notably his widow, Dame Marguerite Pindling.

A total of 15 families were presented keys to their homes; deemed a special moment by the prime minister.

“Today is the culmination of a dream for you, and for your government.  My friends, through all the storms of life, there is nothing quite so comforting as a home.  Our homes are where we decompress — where we come together with loved ones, where we explore our interests, and where we replenish our spirits,” he said.

The prime minister observed that it is a “heartbreaking reality” that in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic, many Bahamians were struggling to secure safe and affordable homes.

He reassured the new homeowners that the Government recognized this issue and is working hard behind the scenes to address it by expanding housing stock across the country.

“My friends, nothing makes me happier than helping Bahamians become first-time homeowners,” the prime minister said.

“Even as the cost of real estate rises throughout our nation, our government’s policies have brought homeownership within reach for more Bahamians.                                                                                                                                                            “We all need a place to come back to — a refuge, a sanctuary, a shelter from the unpredictable elements of life.

“Reliable housing is key to human flourishing, and there is nothing more important to me than improving the lives of Bahamians.”

The prime minister said he took up the mantle from Sir Lynden – the first prime minister of an Independent Bahamas — to improve the lives of Bahamians.  Hence, the Rent-to-Own key presentations took place on the eve of what would have been his 95th birthday.

“As we honour his legacy today, let us reflect on one of his most powerful messages: ‘With faith in God and faith in our country and people, we can rise to whatever height we aspire to’,” said Prime Minister Davis.

Among others participating in the ceremony were: the Hon. Keith Bell, Minister of Housing and Urban Renewal; the Hon. Lisa Rahming, Minister of State, Ministry of Housing and Urban Renewal; and Her Excellency Leslia Miller-Brice.

The Rent-to-Own concept is a housing agreement whereby a tenant signs a rental agreement that includes an option to purchase the property later, typically within a few years.

Minister Bell said the initiative would be expanded to the Family Islands. Recently, first-time homeowners received keys to homes in Renaissance and Pinecrest subdivisions.

New Manifestos Released as Bahamas Heads to Historic May 12 Vote

The Bahamas, April 14, 2026 – With the 2026 Bahamian general election set for May 12, the country’s major political parties have now formally placed their plans before the electorate, offering competing visions for governance, growth and relief.

The governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), led by Philip Davis, launched its “Blueprint for Progress 2026” on April 8, 2026, outlining a 46-page plan focused on long-term development and systems reform. The document places heavy emphasis on energy transition, digital government, workforce training and food security, positioning the party as one seeking continuity following its first term. Just days later, on Sunday, April 12, the opposition Free National Movement (FNM), under Michael Pintard, unveiled its 2026 Manifesto at a major event in Nassau. Spanning 54 pages, the document centers on cost-of-living relief, tax reform, healthcare expansion and housing, offering what the party describes as a more immediate response to economic pressures facing Bahamian families. The FNM has also made its manifesto accessible online.

Beyond the two major parties, the Coalition of Independents (COI) had already entered the policy space earlier, formally unveiling its long-range Vision 2030 framework on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Fusion Superplex in Nassau during a packed national launch led by party leader Lincoln Bain. That framework has since been complemented by a 100-day action plan released in late March/early April 2026, adding a short-term policy layer to its long-range proposals.

These policy rollouts come as the country prepares for a pivotal vote, with the Parliamentary Registration Department confirming a voters’ register of approximately 203,000 eligible voters, one of the largest in the nation’s history. Key dates are now set, with Nomination Day on April 16, followed by advance polls on April 30, ahead of General Election Day on May 12.

With platforms now in the public domain and the timeline locked in, the focus shifts squarely to the electorate—who must now weigh the promises, examine the plans and decide the country’s direction at the polls.

From Concept to Approval: What a 2019 Water Security Plan Now Means for Bahamians

If implemented as planned, the investment is expected to improve water quality, reduce contamination risks and support public health, while increasing supply reliability and limiting service disruptions during droughts or system failures. The project also aims to expand and upgrade infrastructure, including wellfields, pumping stations and storage capacity, and to protect freshwater resources from saltwater intrusion—an increasing threat for low-lying islands. Based on information available from project partners, implementation is not expected to begin immediately. The initiative is anticipated to move into its execution phase later in 2026, following finalisation of financing agreements and completion of preparatory requirements.

From there, the project is projected to unfold over several years, with estimates suggesting a multi-year implementation period of up to seven years to fully deliver the planned upgrades to water infrastructure across The Bahamas.

This means that while the funding has now been approved, the benefits will be realised gradually rather than all at once. A definitive completion date has not been publicly outlined, and detailed timelines tied to specific islands or phases of work have yet to be disclosed.

For Bahamians, the question now shifts from approval to execution—when funds are drawn down, when construction begins, and how consistently the project moves from plan to delivery.
