NASSAU, The Bahamas — The Small Business Development Centre (SBDC) has launched an Entrepreneurs with Disabilities initiative in partnership with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, the Ministry of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.
The Ministries, Department and the Centre want to ensure that entrepreneurship is really accessible for all, so they are aiming to equip aspiring and existing entrepreneurs with access to the resources that are needed to really thrive and make a meaningful contribution to The Bahamas’ economy.
“This initiative clearly demonstrates that our Bahamas is striving towards inclusion and equal opportunity at every level,” Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting the Hon. Myles LaRoda said during the press conference to announce the initiative at the Ministry on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
“Significantly, the launch is happening on the universally celebrated day for Persons with Disabilities, December 3, as declared by the United Nations under the theme, ‘Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.’”
Minister LaRoda explained that the SBDC’s program for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities fits right in with the theme as it affords those who have creative business ideas an opportunity to achieve their dreams without placing any limitations or barriers.
He said, “The program enables the community to start a business or expand an existing one by providing the guidance, training and mentorship to develop a business idea.”
Executive Director, SBDC, Samantha Rolle explained that the program includes the core trio of the Centre’s programs which include training, mentorship and funding, but is elevated to ensure full accessibility.
The Executive Director said, “Our standardized Blueprint Training Course is part of this program with a few added sessions meant specifically for entrepreneurs with disabilities.
“This course will also include ASL and transcripts for screen readers to ensure these courses are accessible to entrepreneurs with visual and auditory disabilities.”
She noted that based on survey findings, 36 per cent of the entrepreneurs would prefer live online workshops and 27 per cent would prefer in-person workshops, therefore, the masterclass component will be hybrid allowing for entrepreneurs to ask questions and directly engage with the course facilitators either in-person or virtually.
The Executive Director said further to the training courses, the SBDC is hosting mentorship for 100 participants in the program, and hosting the ENABLE Business Forum and Expo.
“The Forum allows us to address entrepreneurs with disabilities while also encouraging and guiding corporate Bahamas in ways to be more supportive of these entrepreneurs.
“For the close of this initiative, we are offering a grant for the participants of up to $10,000 to go toward the development of their business.”
She noted that while entrepreneurs with disabilities are eligible for all the SBDC’s initiatives, the Centre found it imperative to host this program specifically for entrepreneurs with disabilities to increase the visibility of their businesses to encourage social reform, and also foster an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The Executive Director added, “Inclusivity is one of our core goals for 2024, and initiative achieves this in more ways than one. By expanding the types of entrepreneurs we support, we are actively working toward creating a more equitable business environment where everyone, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, can succeed.”
