billion unbanked people worldwide. These individuals, many of whom live in the Caribbean and Latin America, lack access to basic financial services. With this partnership, DSS and Huawei will enable telecommunications carriers to offer a mobile wallet solution that empowers the unbanked and underbanked populations, improving their quality of life.”
Saunders added, “Our vision is to build a mobile money ecosystem that’s as seamless and interconnected as the global credit card networks. Imagine having a mobile wallet issued in TCI that you could use in China, Africa, or the Bahamas. This partnership with Huawei is the first step toward making that vision a reality.”
Huawei’s Role in Digital Transformation
Huawei brings its extensive expertise in cloud services, telecommunications, and smart technologies to the partnership. Alex Liu, Regional Manager for Huawei Caribbean, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “DSS’s vision for financial inclusion aligns perfectly with Huawei’s mission to bring digital to every person, home, and organization for a fully connected, intelligent world. By leveraging our cloud infrastructure and innovative technology, we aim to support DSS in revolutionizing mobile money,” said Liu.
A Future of Smart Solutions
The MOU extends beyond mobile money, focusing on strategic cooperation in areas such as Smart Cities, Smart Government, and Smart Education. Saunders emphasized the potential impact on TCI, stating, “Huawei’s advanced ICT technologies could help us drive down the cost of living across our islands.”
Next Steps
DSS plans to launch the beta version of its mobile wallet solution in early 2025, targeting markets with significant unbanked populations, including Haiti, Guyana, and Jamaica. The service will be rolled out globally, enabling telecommunications carriers to quickly adopt the technology without the need for extensive infrastructure investments.
“This partnership is not just about technology,” Saunders concluded. “It’s about making a tangible difference in people’s lives and positioning the Turks and Caicos Islands as a leader in digital innovation.”
