Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, July 26, 2024 – The third-year partnership between the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force and Turks and Caicos Islands Sports Commission, marked by the successful hosting of the Police Action League (PAL), is a testament to the potential of collaborative efforts in youth development.
PAL is a Basketball and Softball league that facilitates boys and girls 10-16 years old. The TCI Basketball Federation and the TCI Softball Federation are integral to the programme’s success as they are the official governing bodies for the respective sports.
The Police Action League is more than just a league – it is a mentorship programme that elevates athletes beyond sports. PAL is a platform that welcomes any boy or girl to play, build friendships, improve teamwork, reduce juvenile delinquency, learn communication skills, and develop their prowess in their respective sports. This inclusivity is a key aspect of our mission to empower these athletes and help forge a successful path for their future.
Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Social Services, Hon. Rachel Taylor, stated, “It is with much pride and joy that I witnessed the continuous uptick in Youth registration at our annual 12 weeks of the Police Action League. Our young boys and girls have the opportunity to harness their talent and skills in the areas of Basketball and Softball. Through this program in partnership with the Police, our students will improve in the areas of team building, discipline, leadership, and conflict and resolution. It is our mandate that our youth be provided greater opportunity for engagement in Sports in environments that are safe and conducive. Special thanks to our many partners, including our coaches and referees, who make themselves available each Saturday during the programme. Our intentional collaboration with the Police provides an opportunity for greater engagement that will foster positive relationships between the police and our Youth. I encourage our parents and guardians to witness the experience and support the events with their children.”
Commissioner of Police Edvin Martin hailed the continued partnership between the Sports Commission and the RT&CIPF, saying, “The youth today are bombarded with images glorifying anti-social behaviour, crime, drugs and violence. As police officers, we often see the many temptations impacting our young people. We know how this could negatively impact their lives. “
Through the PAL programme, young people are provided with alternatives. They are exposed to anger management training, conflict resolution, counselling, communication skills, self-esteembuilding, teamwork and discipline. Our partnership with the Sports Commission continues to foster a more meaningful relationship between young people, law enforcement officers, and sport. ”
The RT&CIPF remains committed to a proactive approach. We are dedicated to mentoring and being role models to all participants, as we believe a strong police/community relationship is critical in the fight against crime.”
