Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands – Friday, 19th July 2024: The government, through the Office of the Deputy Premier and the Ministry of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development (PPID), is pleased to announce the official opening of the newly reconstructed Church Folly and West Road Bridges today, following a brief ceremony at both locations.
The Church Folly Bridge, as it is commonly known, has been in existence for many years. However, due to normal use over time, the bridge suffered significant wear and tear, eventually leading to structural failure. To ensure public safety, the government closed the bridge and initiated the construction of a temporary bridge using thick metal sheets to allow for continued use while permanent plans were made.
The new and improved Church Folly Bridge is designed to accommodate climatic changes and rising sea levels. Strategically located to integrate with ongoing developments in the area, the bridge features enhancements to facilitate greater water flow between the ponds and manage increased water levels during storm surges. Additionally, the bridge is equipped with guard rails and solar lights to ensure safety for all users, day and night.
The West Road Bridge, also undergoing reconstruction, shares similar improvements, including strategic water flow design, safety features, and modern lighting.
Today’s opening ceremony featured remarks from Desmond Wilson, Permanent Secretary within the Office of the Deputy Premier and Ministry of PPID, Linley Goldman of L and L Construction, the contractor for both projects, Honourable Otis Morris, Minister of Home Affairs and Public Safety, and Honourable Jamell Robinson, Deputy Premier and Minister of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development.
The brief ceremony was chaired by Dominique Durham, Deputy Permanent Secretary within the Office of the Deputy Premier and Ministry of PPID, with a vote of thanks given by Ronald Isidro, Project Manager for both projects and an engineer within the Public Works Department.
In his comments, the Honourable Otis Morris stated, “As the Member of Parliament for the ED1 constituency and a Minister in Cabinet for Grand Turk, I am deeply committed to the welfare and advancement of this island and its wonderful people. I am immensely proud to represent you and to witness the positive changes that these projects bring to our community. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Public Works team, the Ministry of PPID, and the contractor for their dedication and hard work in bringing these projects to fruition. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and will have a lasting impact on our island. As we celebrate this milestone, let us remember the words of Psalm 127:1 (KJV): ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.’ Our collective efforts, guided by faith and unity, are what truly strengthen and sustain our community.”
In his comments, the Honourable Deputy Premier stated, “The bridge stands as the centerline of connectivity to the community of Grand Turk, symbolising more than just a physical structure; it represents the lifeline that binds us together. This bridge is the cornerstone by which we live, fostering unity and cooperation among us. As we cross these bridges, let us be reminded of our duty to be our brother’s keeper, ensuring that we support and uplift one another in all aspects of life.”
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the government for their continued support to the Office of the Deputy Premier and the Ministry of PPID, and to the residents of Grand Turk for their patience and support throughout this process.
The government has invested over $800,000 between these two bridges to ensure that residents and visitors can traverse the streets and communities of Grand Turk safely and efficiently in this beautiful by nature Turks and Caicos Islands.
