The Governor’s Office is pleased to announce that four Scholars from the Turks and Caicos Islands have been awarded Chevening Scholarships to pursue their master’s degrees in the UK for the academic year 2024-2025:

• Thadine Crossman MSc Occupational Safety, Health and Environment
• Dodly Prosper MSc Biodiversity and Conservation
• Royshana Robinson MSc Forensic Toxicology
• Ashley Williams MSc Project Management

This is the first time the Turks and Caicos Islands will have four Chevening Scholars within the same academic year. It is also commendable to note that Scholar Royshana Robinson is the top-ranking scholar from across the Overseas Territories.

Chevening Scholarships are awarded to outstanding emerging leaders from all backgrounds and areas of study who can demonstrate that they have the commitment and skills to create positive change in their country. The scholarship offers full financial support for scholars to study for any eligible master’s degree at over 150 UK universities whilst also gaining access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional and cultural experiences.

The Chevening Awards Scheme is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. #MontegoBay, July 3, 2024 – The Government is progressing with plans to construct six Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Schools and one Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Academy.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, says arrangements to build the STEAM school, being cited in Montego Bay, are “proceeding.”

“The land is acquired and the budget is in place from the Ministry of Finance [and the Public Service]. By the end of the year the Ministry of Education [and Youth] can give a timeframe on it,” he stated.

Regarding construction of the STEM Schools, Dr. Chang advised that  “we will be opening the first one in Portmore [St. Catherine] very soon.”

He was speaking during the University of Technology (UTech) Western Campus’ recent STEM Summer camp launch at the institution’s campus in Montego Bay, St. James.

The camp, being held in western Jamaica for the first time, will see some 100 youth from communities in Hanover, Trelawny and St. James engaging in several STEM-related activities.

For his part, Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) President, Oral Heaven, said Jamaica has been declared a ‘STEM island’, adding that the camp serves as testament to the country’s growing prominence in the global STEM landscape.

“This designation opens the door for so many things, through multinational STEM investments [and] real money for our people, positioning Jamaica as a hub of innovation and technological advancement,” he outlined.

Dr. Chang pointed out that there is “a legacy of STEM activity” in the west, noting that the Government is committed to expanding opportunities in the sector.

“It is imperative, therefore, that we attract some of these investments to Montego Bay”, adding that, “we must focus on the positives and potential solutions that STEM can offer.”

The STEM Summer Camp will be held in two phases for junior and senior participants under the theme: ‘Think, Collaborate and Innovate to Grow and Be Resilient’.

Junior participants will attend from July 8-19, and the older youth between July 15 and 26.

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – Wednesday, 26 June 2024: The Ministry of Education is delighted to announce the remarkable performance of students in the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) 2024.  Four hundred and sixty four of 483 students or 96.07% of the candidates achieved overall percentages ranging from 41% to 96.8%. Based on CPEA scoring a student is deemed competent on attaining 41% and above.

The CPEA, which assesses students in critical literacies in the four core subjects, Mathematics, English Language, Science, and Social Studies, is a crucial milestone in primary education. The results reflect the hard work of students, the dedication of teachers, and the support of parents and the wider community.

Honourable Rachel Marshall Taylor, Minister of Education, praised the students for their exceptional achievements. “We are immensely proud of our students and their extraordinary performance in the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment. These results tell a story of diligence and the unwavering commitment of our educators to fostering academic excellence. Our students have demonstrated determination and dedication, and we are proud of their success.”

The achievement of our sons and daughters in the year’s assessment highlights the effectiveness of the educational programs and the supportive learning environment which the Ministry seeks to encourage in each school and across the system.  This success is a collective effort involving the students’ determination, the teachers’ innovative teaching methods, and the parents’ active involvement in their children’s education.

CPEA prize-giving ceremonies will be held across the country beginning on Monday, 1 July 2024 under the theme “Recognising Achievement – Promoting Excellence.”
