Minister of Tourism, the Hon Josephine Connolly
This is the first event of its kind in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Minister of Tourism, the Hon Josephine Connolly said that putting Turks and Caicos culture on the forefront through this initiative is a step on the right direction.
“All over the Caribbean region, countries are defined by their cultural output which is closely intertwined with their tourism product. The Turks and Caicos Islands is defined by its natural beauty on land and sea but we also have a lot of natural talent here and a cultural history that is worth cherishing and promoting. I applaud the organisers of this event for their vision and I look forward to the day this becomes a major tourism draw,” the Minister said.
Mr. Crosley Bain, promoter of the event, said this is the first time they are putting on the show with plans to make it a major annual music and cultural festival that will rival other similar events around the region.
“The aim of the Best of the Best weekend is to try and reintroduce the native music and Rake and Scrape to the Turks and Caicos Islands. The show is not a competition of any sorts, it’s intended to be solely a display of rake and scrape and Junkanoo culture with the intent of establishing an annual cultural event that will promote these cultures, creating international exposure for local bands and artists while boosting tourism during our slow season,” he said.
Large crowds are expected to turn out for the event based on the high demand and sales of tickets over the past few days and the large attendance at Thursday night’s Fish Fry which saw a showcase of Bahamian and Turks and Caicos Junkanoo bands.
Tickets for Best of the Best are $75 and more at the door.
