#TurksandCaicos, December 29, 2023 – More work on the Wheeland Dump is set to begin in 2024 according to Kyle Knowles, Elected Member for Wheeland, in a Christmas message that is sure to bring relief to residents.

“The funds are located, the manpower is on the ground, we are just waiting for a start date so early in the new year work will begin at the dump, which is significant in addressing the health issues that have plagued us for so many years,” he promised while speaking in the House of Assembly.

The work mainly entails putting an end to the constant fires, the Member described the work as a team effort between relevant ministries.

It has been an extremely long time coming, with residents having suffered the issues for years because of mismanagement; and the government dragging its feet on a Caribbean Development Bank-funded consultation that would have unraveled what was needed to improve solid waste disposal. That consultation finally began this year and will provide a review with recommendations on how to permanently fix the issue.

Aside from the dump, Knowles also maintained that infrastructural work would be carried out to keep up with the community’s growth.

“The community is growing and with the rapid pace we are doing our best to keep up with the level of infrastructure necessary to create a modern society for our residents.”

Wheeland is currently the most populous district in the Turks and Caicos.

The Member was speaking at a meeting of the House of Assembly on December 19th.
