#TurksandCaicos, November 14, 2023 – Washington Misick, TCI Premier, has met with the UK Labour Party during his time in London attending the Joint Ministerial Council from November 13-17,  in an attempt to ensure that the TCI’s issues are front of mind after the next election regardless of who wins control of the UK government.

Misick spoke with a Shadow Minister of the party on November 14th. The UK is set to go to election by early 2025.

“We met with the Labour Shadow Minister in terms of what their policy would be toward the overseas territories should they win the next general election,” Misick explained during the JMC Journal, a radio segment on RTC FM designed to bring daily updates from the five day caucus for British overseas territories.

Along with David Lammy who is listed as the Shadow Minister for the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office,  Misick also met with Luke Pollard, Shadow Minister for Defense.

The JMC is where the leaders of OTs gather to liaise with the United Kingdom about their major issues. Misick explained the top priority for the countries this year.

“The main topic for the JMC is sort of a Joint Declaration in terms of the future relationship between the United Kingdom and Overseas Territories,” he updated on the Joint Declaration in a subsequent report.

“We went through the 23 item list– line by line and were able to iron out all of the issues.”

According to the Premier’s Office via RTC FM the document covers the economy, defense, governance, and more.

The various OT governments have been agitating for more autonomy in their countries for some time and while Misick did not reveal what was contained in that document he maintained that it should be tentatively signed during this trip.
