#Canada, July 3, 2023 – Canada celebrated Canada Day on Saturday July 1st, marking the country’s 156th anniversary since the signing of the Constitution Act in 1867 which joined three territories into the single nation, Canada that we know today.

Canada Day commemorates the unification of colonies within the British North America Act, the original name of the Constitution Act.

On July 1st, 1867, the British and soon-to-be Canadians agreed to join the colonies of Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

Interestingly, the day used to be called Dominion Day but Canadians wanted to change the name of their national holiday and so a bill was drafted in 1946 to rename it.

However, the renaming was put on hold by the House of Commons because it’s members didn’t agree on the new name. But when the country celebrated its 100th anniversary, this paved the way for, and saw the emergence of  newly founded Canadian patriotism and people began calling it Canada Day before it was officially instituted by the government in 1982.

Canadians celebrate the day in many ways including fireworks, parades, picnics, and events, and it is also seen as a kick off to many festivals that happen across the country in July and August.
