January 20, 2023 – Chinese New Year is coming up this Sunday January 22 and 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit.   A year of hope is what many are predicting.

The Chinese New Year rather than being determined by our own Gregorian calendar is determined by the Lunar calendar.  The holiday date falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice on December 21 which can be anywhere between 21 to 51 days behind January 1st.

The 12 animal zodiac, which in Chinese culture  determines what the year will be like, goes in the order of Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The year of the rabbit is said to be hopeful as the rabbit is the symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture and it is said people born in the Year of the Rabbit usually have soft and tender personality traits.

Chinese people all around the globe will celebrate the New Year with traditional Lion and dragon dances in massive intricate costumes, temple fairs, flower market shopping and more.
