#USA, January 24, 2023 – A California Lunar New Year celebration ended in tragedy on Saturday night when a murderer fired on Star Dance Studio in Monterey Park, Los Angeles killing 10 people.

This is the United States’ 33rd mass shooting, and third in California since the start of 2023 according to Gun Violence Archive.

Soon after that shooting another armed man invaded a different dance studio but was overpowered and escaped.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department said they were still investigating a connection

In updates via Facebook the department revealed that five men and five women were killed in the studio and another 10 were rushed to hospital after the shooter entered and began shooting around 10:22 p.m. Saturday night.  The shooter escaped the scene.

Hours later, around 2 p.m. neighboring police engaged in a standoff with a white van in Torrance, California thought to be connected with the shooting just 30 miles from where the first shooting took place.

The driver of the van killed himself before police could get to him.

Based on witness description and photos police have warned the public to be on the lookout for an ‘armed and dangerous Asian male 30 – 51 years old’.

The shooting has not been declared a hate crime.
