#Venezuela, October 13, 2022 – At least twenty-two 25 people are dead, and more than fifty are reported missing in Central American following its dalliance with monsoon type rainfall; the story is particularly heartbreaking in Las Tejerias, Venezuela after a river overflowed on Sunday.

The flash flooding caused by incessant rains is the latest deadly disaster caused by what meteorologists describe as a “La Nina weather event.”

Several houses and businesses were destroyed, and photos showed toppled trees littering streets covered with mud and debris, including splintered wood, household items and mangled cars.

President Nicolas Maduro declared three days of national mourning for the victims.  He also said 20,000 officials, including rescuers and members of security forces, have been deployed to the affected regions.

In recent months several people have died as historically high precipitation affected the country.

In August, at least 15 people died in the Venezuelan Andes after heavy rains triggered mud and rock slides. At least eight people were reported dead in September when floods from heavy rains flowed through a religious retreat in the western part of the country.
