Turks and Caicos Islands Nominated for 2022 Caribbean’s Best Cruise Destination Award

#TurksandCaicos, August 4, 2022 – It was recently announced that the Turks and Caicos Islands has been nominated for the World Cruise Awards’ “2022 Caribbean’s Best Cruise Destination” Award for the second year in a row. The World Cruise Awards, which is the sister event to the World Travel Awards, seeks to “recognize and reward excellence in the cruise industry.” In its inaugural ceremony, which was held on October 24th, 2021 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Turks and Caicos Islands was a nominee for the 2021 Caribbean Best Cruise Destination award, which was won by Jamaica. Other nominees included Barbados, Cayman Islands, as well as The Bahamas.

Historically, the Turks and Caicos Islands has done extremely well at the World Travel Awards. This year, the Turks and Caicos Islands has been nominated for eight World Travel Awards. From 2015 to 2021, the Turks and Caicos Islands, as a whole, won the award for “Caribbean’s Leading Beach Destination.” The three years prior, spanning from 2012 to 2014, Grace Bay Beach won the award. And from 2019 to 2021, the Turks and Caicos Islands also won the award for “Caribbean’s Most Romantic Destination.” Now, TCI seeks to achieve similar success at the World Cruise Awards.

The Grand Turk Cruise Center is a world-class facility and this nomination is a testament to that, as well as to the work the Turks and Caicos Islands has put in since reopening the Grand Turk Cruise Center in December 2021. I highly encourage everyone to take the time to cast their vote for the Turks and Caicos Islands”, stated Acting Director of Tourism, Mary Lightbourne.

The voting window for the 2022 Caribbean’s Best Cruise Destination Award closes on Sunday, August 7th 2022. Votes can be cast by cruise industry professionals and cruise consumers alike on the World Cruise Awards’ webpage – https://worldcruiseawards.com/award/caribbean-best-cruise-destination/2022.

After voting closes, the nominee with the most votes will be named the Caribbean’s Best Cruise Destination of 2022.

Jamaican gets multi-million dollar grant to enhance resilience

Jamaica got a 3 million US dollar grant from humanitarian charity organisation Direct Relief, as part of its mission to strengthen resilience in the Caribbean region. This is also an effort to enhance Healthcare systems and infrastructure throughout Jamaica in preparation for natural disasters as the organization renews its ongoing partnership with the island. This was announced by Direct Relief in an article on May 1.

Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana sign security agreement

To enhance and strengthen security in the Guiana Shield, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana on Monday April 29, signed a security common master plan following a meeting in George Town, as announced By President of Guyana Irfaan Ali on Facebook. Ali expressed that the agreement will hopefully enhance collaborations and relations between Suriname and French Guiana.

Grenada Prime Minister says there needs to be greater focus on coral health in the region’s universities.

The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, at the 2024 Sustainable Tourism Conference on April 22, expressed that Caribbean universities should be leading researchers for coral restoration as he addressed the importance of corals to the region’s capacity for tourism sustainability amid climate change

Regarding this, he called for more funding to encourage universities to create more marine experts, given the region’s vulnerability to climate change effects.
