MonkeyPox Cases continue to Rise

August 5, 2022 – Bermuda and Martinique have joined the list of countries with a positive Monkeypox case as the disease continues spreading rapidly. Additionally deaths from the disease are now rising. Despite its mild nature compared to other diseases 11 people have died so far, five of them in the last seven days.

Cases continue to spiral with 25,054 recorded by Thursday, August 4, some 5,362 of those cases were recorded in the last seven days.

The outbreak is well and truly worldwide as all six regions that the World Health Organization monitors have now recorded cases including the Americas.

The US continues to lead the case count with over 6000 confirmed cases. Three states have declared health emergencies and the country is scrambling for vaccines.

Caribbean countries affected by MonkeyPox include The Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Martinique and Venezuela.

Despite having a suspected case the Turks and Caicos is not on the board yet as the country awaits results.
