TCHTA Expresses Sympathy to Families and Offers Support in the Fight Against Crime

#Providenciales, October 17, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – A non-profit organization advocating on behalf of hundreds of local businesses on issues involving the tourism industry, the TCHTA membership is distraught by the outbreak in gun-related crimes resulting in multiple people losing their lives this year. “Our members would like to send our deepest sympathies to all the families, friends, and co-workers of those we’ve lost,” expressed volunteer president Todd Foss.

The industry of tourism is our country’s most valuable economic resource. For it to be sustainable we need to ensure the safety of our tourism customers. Equally important is that Turks and Caicos Islanders and residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands benefit from the resource of tourism in the form of a safe environment in which to live and work.

The TCHTA is a strong supporter of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. From body armor to a new 911 system, the association enjoys a productive working partnership with the TCRPF. The TCHTA is encouraged by the willingness of the Office of the Governor and the TCRPF to implement new strategies to combat serious crime including the use of specially trained officers from larger countries that have more experience then Turks and Caicos when it comes to dealing with individuals showing no regard for the lives of others.

“When you are going through something never experienced before in a community known for its security it is reassuring that our leaders are considering all options to keep us safe,” noted Stacy Cox CEO of the TCHTA.

On that note, the private sector organization would like to work closer with government to assist with not only the immediate dangers facing citizens, but also the underlying causes of such violence which requires a long-term strategy that can only be successful if it involves a concerted partnership between government, the private sector, churches, non-governmental organizations, and the community as a whole.

Under the Constitution, the Governor retained overarching authority, but was required in many instances to act on the advice of the Executive Council, particularly in shaping policy and overseeing government operations.

The Chief Minister, meanwhile, was positioned as the central political leader, responsible for directing government business and advising on the appointment of Ministers.

Importantly, the Constitution also allowed for the assignment of responsibilities to Ministers, giving them oversight of specific areas of government — a structure that remains at the heart of today’s Cabinet system.
