#Bahamas, May 11, 2018 – Nassau – In her role as Commander-In-Chief of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), Governor General of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling participated in the 38th Anniversary Memorial Service in memory of RBDF marines who died in the line of duty during the sinking of the HMBS Flamingo on May 10, 1980.

During the event held at the RBDF Coral Harbour Base, Her Excellency brought remarks and joined the Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Hubert Minnis, Leader of the Opposition the Hon. Philip Davis, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. Peter Turnquest, Minister of National Security the Hon. Marvin Dames, other senior Government officials, Commander of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Commodore Tellis Bethel, Commissioner of Police Designate, Anthony Ferguson, US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Ms. Stephanie Bowers, military officers and stakeholders, and family representatives in laying wreaths at the Memorial Monument.

Her Excellency also laid a wreath at waterside.  During her remarks, she said that as those present reflected on the past, all must also express appreciation for the “loving support” given by the spouses, families and loved ones of Defence Force personnel who sacrifice much in allowing them time to serve The Bahamas.  “Your country is most grateful for your forbearance and for the love which you show by supporting your men and women, who serve our country so admirably,” Her Excellency said.

She added: “As the Defence Force enters and new era of development, continuing to confront new challenges, I am delighted to convey the gratitude and appreciation of the Government and people of The Bahamas for the tenacity and resilience of all of the members of our Defence Force in preserving the peace and security of our nation, and ‘Guarding Our Heritage’.”
