TCI: CVQ Portfolio Workshop for High School Teachers

#TurksandCaicos, February 2, 2018 – Providenciales – The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports & Library Services, in a major thrust to promote competency-based education in the country, hosted a two-day training workshop in Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ).   The event was held at the HJ Robinson High and Clement Howell High Schools respectively on January 25 and 26, 2018.   Forty-five teachers from public and private high schools throughout the islands with specialization in TVET Education participated.  The facilitator was Miss Jodine Williams who currently serves as the Senior Assistant Registrar in the Syllabus & Curriculum Division, at the CXC Regional office in Kingston, Jamaica.

In an effort to address the need for local skilled workers and to provide greater curriculum options that takes into consideration the individual learning styles and interests of our students, the Ministry of Education introduced the CVQ Programme in public high schools in 2015.  The programmes introduced thus far are Carpentry, Commercial Food Preparation, Data Operations and Office Administration.  Other programmes are expected to be introduced in the coming academic year.

The CVQ Programme is based on Competency-Based Education Training and Assessment (CBETA) which is built on the philosophy of being learner centred.   As students’ progress by mastering each competency, they are required to create and maintain portfolios of their work.   The workshop was therefore specifically to train teachers in helping students build and manage their portfolios, as well as train teachers to assess their students work, based on established industry standards.
